The Sutra
"Listen while the ultimate mystical teaching is imparted. Eyes still, without blinking, at once become absolutely free."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
When something deeply true is being transmitted - by a guru, a scripture, or life itself - keep your eyes absolutely still. Do not blink. In this total receptivity with frozen gaze, the teaching bypasses the mind and enters directly into your being. Freedom is not gradual here - it is "at once." The still eye is the still mind.

How to Practice
This technique is for moments of deep listening - to a teacher, sacred text, or inner truth.
When you sense something profound is being communicated, freeze your eyes. Do not blink.
Keep the gaze soft but completely still. No movement of the eyeballs.
Let the teaching enter through the stillness. The mind, linked to eye movement, also becomes still.
In this stillness, understanding happens not through intellect but through direct transmission.
The freedom is immediate - "at once" - because it is not the result of a process but a recognition.
Duration
5-15 minutes
Best Time
