Look Lovingly at an Object - The Blessing
किञ्चिज्ज्ञात्वा द्वितीयं तु बाह्यं चैवान्तरात्मनि । युगपद्भावयेत्सर्वं न चैतत्किञ्चिदन्तरम् ॥
kinchijjnatva dvitiyam tu bahyam chaivantaratmani | yugapadbhavayetsarvam na chaitatkimchidantaram ||
VBT Verse 41
The Sutra
"Look lovingly at some object. Do not go to another object. Here in the middle of the object - the blessing."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
One of the simplest yet most profound techniques. Choose any object - a flower, a flame, a stone - and look at it with love. Do not let your eyes or mind wander to anything else. Stay with this one object lovingly. In the middle of total, loving attention, a blessing arises. This is because love + attention = meditation. When both are focused on one point, the divine reveals itself.
Original Sanskrit
किञ्चिज्ज्ञात्वा द्वितीयं तु बाह्यं चैवान्तरात्मनि । युगपद्भावयेत्सर्वं न चैतत्किञ्चिदन्तरम् ॥
kinchijjnatva dvitiyam tu bahyam chaivantaratmani | yugapadbhavayetsarvam na chaitatkimchidantaram ||
Vijnanabhairava Verse 41 (Technique 18 of 112)
How to Practice
Choose an object that you find beautiful or meaningful - a flower, candle, crystal, or image.
Place it at a comfortable distance and look at it with genuine love and affection.
Do not analyze or think about the object. Simply LOOK with warmth, as you would look at a beloved.
When your attention wants to wander to another object or thought, gently bring it back. Stay here.
Keep looking lovingly. The boundary between you and the object will begin to soften.
"In the middle of the object" means: in the heart of your attention, where subject meets object, blessing arises.
This is love-based trataka (steady gazing) - gentler and deeper than forceful concentration.
