See a Past Happening - Form is Transformed

मायाविमोहिनी नाम कलायाः कलनं स्थितम् । इत्यादिधर्मिणि ध्याये ततो ध्यायीन्द्रियं भवेत् ॥

mayavimohinee nama kalayah kalanam sthitam | ityaadidharmiNi dhyaye tato dhyayeendriyam bhavet ||

VBT Verse 45

Intermediate🎯 Attention & Focus15-20 minutesEvening - when memory naturally surfaces

The Sutra

"Let attention be at a place where you are seeing some past happening, and even your form, having lost its present characteristics, is transformed."

Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)

Understanding

A technique that uses memory as a doorway to transformation. Revisit a place where something significant happened in the past. Let yourself be so completely there - in that time, that place - that your present form loses its current characteristics. You become who you were then. This is not nostalgia; it is the recognition that "you" are not fixed. When form is seen as changeable, formlessness is revealed.

Original Sanskrit

मायाविमोहिनी नाम कलायाः कलनं स्थितम् । इत्यादिधर्मिणि ध्याये ततो ध्यायीन्द्रियं भवेत् ॥

mayavimohinee nama kalayah kalanam sthitam | ityaadidharmiNi dhyaye tato dhyayeendriyam bhavet ||

Vijnanabhairava Verse 45 (Technique 22 of 112)

How to Practice

1

Close your eyes. Recall a specific place where a significant event happened in your past.

2

Reconstruct the scene in vivid detail - the sights, sounds, smells, the feeling of being there.

3

Let yourself become so absorbed that your present body, age, and situation are forgotten.

4

Feel your form changing - you are becoming who you were in that past moment.

5

Notice: if "you" can be this AND that, who is the constant? What is the unchanging awareness that witnessed both?

6

The transformation is the realization: form is fluid, but awareness is eternal.
