VBT Verse 44
The Sutra
"Pierce some part of your nectar-filled form with a pin, and gently enter the piercing and attain to the inner purity."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
A technique of total presence through a sharp, focused sensation. The body is described as "nectar-filled" - it is sacred, not to be harmed. A tiny pinprick creates a point of intense awareness. By entering INTO this point of sensation with full attention, rather than recoiling from it, you discover the inner purity that lies beneath all sensation.
Original Sanskrit
अनागतायां निद्रायां प्रणष्टे बाह्यगोचरे । सावस्था मनसा गम्या परा देवी प्रकाशते ॥
anagatayam nidrayam pranashte bahyagocare | savastha manasa gamya para devi prakashate ||
Vijnanabhairava Verse 44 (Technique 21 of 112)
How to Practice
This technique uses a very light, sharp stimulus - like pressing a fingernail into your palm.
Create a single point of sharp, clear sensation. Not painful, but vivid and unmistakable.
Instead of pulling away from the sensation, move your awareness INTO it. Enter the very center of the feeling.
The body is called "nectar-filled" - even this sharp point contains divine nectar when met with full awareness.
As you enter the sensation completely, the sense of "me feeling pain" dissolves. Only sensation remains.
In that pure sensation without a "feeler," inner purity is revealed - consciousness without ego.
