Stop the Senses at the Creeping of an Ant

लेलिहानस्य मध्ये तु चिन्तयेत्तन्मनाः शिवम् । सर्वं देवमयं लोकं तदा द्रष्टुं समर्थभाक् ॥

VBT Verse 34

The Sutra

"Stop the doors of the senses when feeling the creeping of an ant. Then."

Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)

Understanding

A beautifully precise technique. When you feel something extremely subtle - like an ant crawling on your skin - stop ALL your senses in that moment. Close your eyes, stop listening, stop thinking. Let only that one tiny sensation exist. In that total focus on something infinitely small, something infinitely vast opens up. The sutra ends with just "Then." - because what happens cannot be described in words.

Original Sanskrit

Vijnanabhairava Verse 34 (Technique 11 of 112)

How to Practice

1

Wait for or create a very subtle physical sensation - the lightest possible touch on your skin.

2

The moment you feel it, immediately close all other senses. Close your eyes, let sounds fade.

3

Pour ALL your awareness into that one tiny sensation. Let it become your entire universe.

4

The sensation is so subtle that it demands total presence. The mind cannot wander when tracking something so delicate.

5

In this total presence, the doors of perception shift. The word "Then" points to what opens up - discover it yourself.

6

You can practice this with any very subtle sensation: a light breeze, a hair moving, the pulse in your fingertip.

Duration

5-10 minutes (or spontaneous moments)
