The Space Between Two Breaths
ऊर्ध्वे प्राणो ह्यधो जीवो विसर्गात्मा परोच्चरेत् । उत्पत्तिद्वितयस्थाने भरणाद्भरिता स्थितिः ॥
urdhve prano hyadho jivo visargatma paroccaret | utpattidvitayasthane bharanadbharita sthitih ||
VBT Verse 24
The Sutra
"Radiant one, this experience may dawn between two breaths. After breath comes in (down) and just before turning up (out) - the beneficence."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
The most foundational technique of the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra. Shiva begins with breath because it is the bridge between body and consciousness. In the tiny gap where your inhale ends and exhale has not yet begun, there is a moment of absolute stillness - that stillness is your true nature. This is the simplest and most direct doorway to meditation.
Original Sanskrit

Vijnanabhairava Verse 24 (Technique 1 of 112)
How to Practice
Sit comfortably with your spine straight. Close your eyes and let your body settle naturally.
Begin observing your natural breath without trying to control it. Simply watch the inhale and exhale for a few minutes.
Now bring your full attention to the exact turning point - where the inhale ends and before the exhale begins.
In that tiny gap, there is a moment of stillness. No breath moves. Rest your awareness fully there.
Do not hold your breath forcefully. Simply notice the natural pause and let your attention dissolve into it.
With practice, this gap will feel like it stretches - a doorway opens into silent, thought-free awareness.
If thoughts arise, gently return to watching the turning point. No judgment, just return.
