The Energy-Filled Center Where Breaths Fuse
न व्रजेन्न विशेच्छक्तिर्मरुद्रूपा विकासिते । निर्विकल्पकतां मध्ये तया भैरवरूपता ॥
na vrajenna vishecchaktirmarudrepa vikaasite | nirvikalpakatam madhye taya bhairavaroopataa ||
VBT Verse 26
The Sutra
"Or, whenever in-breath and out-breath fuse, at this instant touch the energy-less, energy-filled center."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
This technique points to the paradox at the heart of existence: the center where breaths meet is simultaneously empty and overflowing. It is energy-less because no movement happens there - yet energy-filled because all potential exists in that stillness. When you touch this center, you touch the source from which both inhale and exhale arise.
Original Sanskrit
न व्रजेन्न विशेच्छक्तिर्मरुद्रूपा विकासिते । निर्विकल्पकतां मध्ये तया भैरवरूपता ॥
na vrajenna vishecchaktirmarudrepa vikaasite | nirvikalpakatam madhye taya bhairavaroopataa ||
Vijnanabhairava Verse 26 (Technique 3 of 112)
How to Practice
Sit in a quiet place with spine erect. Close your eyes and relax completely.
Watch your breath until you notice the point where in-breath and out-breath merge - the fusion point.
This is not the same as the gap. It is the CENTER - the source from which both directions of breath emerge.
Feel into this center. It is like the eye of a storm: perfectly still while energy moves all around it.
The text says "energy-less, energy-filled" - hold this paradox. Do not try to resolve it mentally.
Let your awareness dissolve into this center. Thoughts will slow, then stop.
Rest here without effort. You are touching what the tradition calls Bhairava - the source of all movement and all stillness.
