The Sutra
"Believe omniscient, omnipotent, pervading."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
Three words: omniscient (all-knowing), omnipotent (all-powerful), pervading (everywhere present). This technique says: believe this about yourself. Not as egoistic inflation, but as recognition of your true nature. Consciousness is all-knowing - it knows every experience. It is all-powerful - it creates every experience. It pervades everything - there is nowhere consciousness is not. You are this consciousness. Believe it, and the belief becomes direct experience.
Original Sanskrit
प्रान्तभूमौ शरीरस्य विहायोन्यां शरीरिणम् ।
praantabhoomau shareerasya vihaayonyaam shareerinaam |
Vijnanabhairava Verse 111 (Technique 88 of 112)
How to Practice
Sit in meditation and consider: what if I am truly all-knowing?
Not that the ego knows everything, but that consciousness - your true nature - knows all that is.
Consider: what if I am all-powerful? Not the personal ego, but the consciousness that creates all experience.
Consider: what if I pervade everything? Not this body, but the awareness in which all bodies appear.
Do not argue with these statements. Simply believe them. Let the belief saturate your being.
As the belief deepens, it transitions from concept to direct experience. You begin to FEEL omniscient, omnipotent, pervading.
