The Sutra
"Stopping ears by pressing and the rectum by contracting, enter the sound."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
A physical technique combining Shanmukhi Mudra with Mula Bandha. Press the ears closed to block external sound. Contract the root (Mula Bandha) to seal the downward energy. With both seals engaged, inner sound is amplified dramatically. You enter directly into the realm of inner sound - the Nada that is always vibrating within but is normally drowned out by external noise.
Original Sanskrit

Vijnanabhairava Verse 69 (Technique 46 of 112)
How to Practice
Sit with spine straight. Take a few deep breaths to settle.
Press both ears closed firmly with your thumbs or fingers.
Simultaneously contract the root muscles (perineum area) - this is Mula Bandha.
With ears sealed and root contracted, energy is directed inward and upward.
Listen to the inner sounds that arise - buzzing, humming, ringing, high-pitched tones.
Enter INTO these sounds. Follow them deeper. They lead to progressively subtler layers.
The deepest sound is almost imperceptible - a vibration felt rather than heard. This is Nada Brahman.
Duration
