Sanskrit Letters as Honey-Filled Points of Awareness
किञ्चिज्ज्ञात्वा निवर्तस्व बाह्यं निरपेक्षया । स्वभावमेव संपश्येत्तदा तत्त्वार्थदर्शनम् ॥
kinchijjnatva nivartasva bahyam nirapekshaya | svabhavameva sampashyettada tattvarthadarshanam ||
VBT Verse 60
The Sutra
"Devi, imagine the Sanskrit letters in these honey-filled foci of awareness, first as letters, then more subtly as sounds, then as most subtle feeling. Then, leaving them aside, be free."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
A four-stage refinement technique using Sanskrit letters. First visualize the letters in the energy centers of your body (which are "honey-filled" with prana). Then let the letters dissolve into their sounds. Then let the sounds dissolve into subtle feeling. Then leave even the feeling aside. Each stage is subtler than the last, until you arrive at the freedom beyond all form.
Original Sanskrit
किञ्चिज्ज्ञात्वा निवर्तस्व बाह्यं निरपेक्षया । स्वभावमेव संपश्येत्तदा तत्त्वार्थदर्शनम् ॥
kinchijjnatva nivartasva bahyam nirapekshaya | svabhavameva sampashyettada tattvarthadarshanam ||
Vijnanabhairava Verse 60 (Technique 37 of 112)
How to Practice
Stage 1: Visualize Sanskrit letters (any mantra or seed syllable) in your body centers - chakras, heart, third eye.
These centers are described as "honey-filled" - sweet, full of living energy.
Stage 2: Let the visual letters dissolve into their sounds. Hear the letters internally.
Stage 3: Let the sounds dissolve into subtle feeling - just the vibration, the essence of the sound.
Stage 4: Leave even the feeling aside. Drop everything. Be free.
Each stage takes you deeper: form to sound to feeling to freedom.
