VBT Verse 50

Beginner🔥 Emotions & Desire20-45 minutes (movement) + 10-15 minutes (lying still)Evening or during dedicated practice time

The Sutra

"Roam about until exhausted and then, dropping to the ground, in this dropping be whole."

Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)

Understanding

An intensely physical technique. Walk, run, dance, roam - exhaust yourself completely. When the body can go no further, drop to the ground. In that dropping, when the body is spent and the mind is too tired to think, you become whole. The thinking mind requires energy; when energy is used up in movement, the mind stops on its own. Sufi whirling dervishes use this same principle.

Original Sanskrit

Vijnanabhairava Verse 50 (Technique 27 of 112)

How to Practice

1

Choose an open space - a field, a room, a garden.

2

Begin moving. Walk fast, run, dance, spin - whatever feels natural. Move with total intensity.

3

Do not conserve energy. Give everything to the movement. Let it be chaotic, wild, free.

4

Continue until you are truly exhausted - when the body simply cannot move anymore.

5

Then DROP to the ground. Lie face down or face up. Let the earth hold you.

6

In this dropping, do nothing. The mind is too exhausted to think. The body is too tired to move.

7

In this gap of total exhaustion, wholeness is experienced. You are simply HERE, complete.

Duration

20-45 minutes (movement) + 10-15 minutes (lying still)

Best Time

Evening or during dedicated practice time
