Verse 1

Sanskrit

गङ्गाधरं शशिकिशोरधरं त्रिलोकीरक्षाधरं निटिलचन्द्रधरं त्रिधारम् । भस्मावधूलनधरं गिरिराजकन्यादिव्यावलोकनधरं वरदं प्रपद्ये ॥

Transliteration

gaṅgādharaṃ śaśikiśoradharaṃ trilokīrakṣādharaṃ niṭilacandradharaṃ tridhāram | bhasmāvadhūlanadharaṃ girirājakanyādivyāvalokanadharaṃ varadaṃ prapadye ||

Translation

I take refuge in the boon-giver who wears the smearing of ash, the Lord of Kashi, bearer of the Ganga, bearer of the young moon, bearer of the protection of the three worlds, bearer of the moon and triple-streamed Ganga upon his forehead, holding the divine gaze of the mountain-king's daughter.

Deep Meaning

I take refuge in the giver of boons, the lord of Kashi, who holds the Ganga, who bears the young moon, who protects the three worlds, who bears the moon on his forehead and the three streams. He is covered with ash and gazes with divine eyes on the daughter of the king of mountains.

Verse 2

काशीश्वरं सकलभक्तजनार्तिहारं विश्वेश्वरं प्रणतपालनभव्यभारम् । रामेश्वरं विजयदानविधानधीरं गौरीश्वरं वरदहस्तधरं नमामः ॥

Transliteration

kāśīśvaraṃ sakalabhaktajanārtihāraṃ viśveśvaraṃ praṇatapālanabhavyabhāram | rāmeśvaraṃ vijayadānavidhānadhīraṃ gaurīśvaraṃ varadahastadharaṃ namāmaḥ ||

Translation

We bow to Gaurishwara, remover of all devotees' afflictions, Lord of Rama, Lord of the universe, bearing the splendid burden of protecting those who bow, steadfast in bestowing victory, holding the boon-giving hand-gesture.

Deep Meaning

The lord of Kashi, who removes the sorrows of all devotees, Vishveshvara, who bears the great burden of protecting those who bow, the lord of Rameshvara, firm in giving victory, Gaurishvara, who holds the boon-giving hand: we bow to him.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

गङ्गोत्तमाङ्गकलितं ललितं विशालं तं मङ्गलं गरलनीलगलं ललामम् । श्रीमुण्डमाल्यवलयोज्वलमञ्जुलीलं लक्ष्मीश्वरार्चितपदाम्बुजमाभजामः ॥

Transliteration

gaṅgottamāṅgakalitaṃ lalitaṃ viśālaṃ taṃ maṅgalaṃ garalanīlagalaṃ lalāmam | śrīmuṇḍamālyavalayojvalamañjulīlaṃ lakṣmīśvarārcitapadāmbujam ābhajāmaḥ ||

Translation

We worship him who is beautified by the Ganga on his head, lovely, vast, auspicious, handsome with dark-blue throat from poison, splendid with garlands of skulls and bangles, performing sweet play, whose lotus-feet are worshipped by Vishnu.

Deep Meaning

The Ganga adorns his head. He is beautiful and vast, and his throat is dark from the poison. He is auspicious and the mark of the forehead. With a garland of skulls and bracelets of splendour, with graceful play, his lotus feet are worshipped by Lakshmishvara. We worship him.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

दारिद्र्यदुःखदहनं कमनं सुराणां दीनार्तिदावदहनं दमनं रिपूणाम् । दानं श्रियां प्रणमनं भुवनाधिपानां मानं सतां वृषभवाहनमानमामः ॥

Transliteration

dāridryaduḥkhadahanaṃ kamanaṃ surāṇāṃ dīnārtidāvadahanaṃ damanaṃ ripūṇām | dānaṃ śriyāṃ praṇamanaṃ bhuvanādhipānāṃ mānaṃ satāṃ vṛṣabhavāhanamānamāmaḥ ||

Translation

We bow well to the bull-mounted Lord, the burning of poverty and sorrow, desirable among gods, a forest-fire for the suffering of the wretched, subduer of enemies, bestower of prosperities, object of bow for rulers of worlds, revered by the virtuous.

Deep Meaning

He removes poverty and sorrow, is lovely to the gods, is the forest-fire that burns the sorrows of the miserable, subdues enemies, gives wealth, is bowed to by the lords of the worlds, and is honoured by the good. We bow to Shiva, who rides the bull.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रशरणं रमणं भवान्याः शश्वत्प्रपन्नभरणं धरणं धरायाः । संसारभारहरणं करुणं वरेण्यं संतापतापकरणं करवै शरण्यम् ॥

Transliteration

śrīkṛṣṇacandraśaraṇaṃ ramaṇaṃ bhavānyāḥ śaśvatprapannabharaṇaṃ dharaṇaṃ dharāyāḥ | saṃsārabhāraharaṇaṃ karuṇaṃ vareṇyaṃ saṃtāpatāpakaraṇaṃ karavai śaraṇyam ||

Translation

I take refuge in the protector, refuge of Shri Krishnachandra, husband of Bhavani, constantly sustaining the surrendered, supporter of the earth, remover of the world's burden, compassionate, supreme, dispeller of afflictions.

Deep Meaning

I take refuge in Shankara, who is the refuge of Krishna and Chandra, the beloved of Bhavani, always the protector of those who take refuge, the supporter of the earth, the one who removes the burden of worldly existence, compassionate and excellent, who ends the burning of distress. I resort to him as the refuge.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

चण्डीपिचण्डिलवितुण्डधृताभिषेकं श्रीकार्तिकेयकलनृत्यकलावलोकम् । नन्दीश्वरास्यवरवाद्यमहोत्सवाढ्यं सोल्लासहासगिरिजं गिरिशं तमीडे ॥

Transliteration

caṇḍīpicaṇḍilavituṇḍadhṛtābhiṣekaṃ śrīkārtikeyakalanṛtyakalāvalokam | nandīśvarāsyavaravādyamahotsavāḍhyaṃ sollāsahāsagirijaṃ giriśaṃ tam īḍe ||

Translation

I praise that Lord Girisha, anointed by Chandi, Pichandila and Ganesha's trunk, spectator of Kartikeya's artful dance, enriched by the great festival of Nandi's music, making Parvati laugh with joy.

Deep Meaning

I praise Girisha, the lord of mountains, whom Chandi and Pichandila bathe with the tip of their trunks, who sees the dance of Kartikeya's art, who is pleased by the great festival of the instruments of Nandishvara's mouth, and who laughs joyfully with Girija.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

श्रीमोहिनीनिविडरागभरोपगूढं योगेश्वरेश्वरहृदम्बुजवासरासम् । सम्मोहनं गिरिसुताञ्चितचन्द्रचूडं श्रीविश्वनाथमधिनाथमुपैमि नित्यम् ॥

Transliteration

śrīmohinīniviḍarāgabharapogūḍhaṃ yogeśvareśvarahṛdambujavāsarāsam | sammohanaṃ girisutāñcitacandracūḍaṃ śrīviśvanātham adhinātham upaimi nityam ||

Translation

I constantly approach Supreme Lord Shri Vishwanatha, embraced with intense love by Shri Mohini, dwelling through the Rasa dance in the lotus-heart of the Lord of yogis, enchanting, bearing the moon worshipped by Parvati.

Deep Meaning

I always approach Vishvanatha, the lord of lords, embraced with the deep love of Mohini, who dwells in the lotus of the hearts of the lords of yoga, who makes the world fascinated, whose moon is worshipped by Girisuta, the lord of lords.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

आपद् विनश्यति समृध्यति सर्वसम्पद् विघ्नाः प्रयान्ति विलयं शुभमभ्युदेति । योग्याङ्गनाप्तिरतुलोत्तमपुत्रलाभो विश्वेश्वरस्तवमिमं पठतो जनस्य ॥

Transliteration

āpad vinaśyati samṛdhyati sarvasampad vighnāḥ prayānti vilayaṃ śubham abhyudeti | yogyāṅganāptir atulottamaputralābho viśveśvarastavam imaṃ paṭhato janasya ||

Translation

For a person who recites this hymn to Vishweshwara, danger vanishes, all wealth prospers, obstacles dissolve, auspiciousness arises, and he obtains a suitable wife and an incomparable son.

Deep Meaning

A person who recites this hymn of Vishveshvara has misfortune destroyed, obtains all wealth, obstacles disappear, auspiciousness arises, and he obtains a fine wife and an excellent son.

Verse 9

Sanskrit

वन्दी विमुक्तिमधिगच्छति तूर्णमेति स्वास्थ्यं रुजार्दित उपैति गृहं प्रवासी । विद्यायशोविजय इष्टसमस्तलाभः सम्पद्यतेऽस्य पठनात् स्तवनस्य सर्वम् ॥

Transliteration

vandī vimuktim adhigacchati tūrṇam eti svāsthyaṃ rujārdita upaiti gṛhaṃ pravāsī | vidyāyaśovijaya iṣṭasamastalābhaḥ sampadyate 'sya paṭhanāt stavanasya sarvam ||

Translation

A captive obtains freedom, one afflicted by disease swiftly regains health, a traveller returns home, and learning, fame, victory, and all desired gains are accomplished through reciting this hymn.

Deep Meaning

A traveller quickly returns home from a foreign land, and learning, fame, victory and all desires are fulfilled. This is the result of the recitation of this praise.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

कन्या वरं सुलभते पठनादमुष्य स्तोत्रस्य धान्यधनवृद्धिसुखं समिच्छन् । किं च प्रसीदति विभुः परमो दयालुः श्रीविश्वनाथ इह सम्भजतोऽस्य साम्बः ॥

Transliteration

kanyā varaṃ sulabhate paṭhanād amuṣya stotrasya dhānyadhanavṛddhisukhaṃ samicchan | kiṃ ca prasīdati vibhuḥ paramo dayāluḥ śrīviśvanātha iha sambhajato 'sya sāmbaḥ ||

Translation

A maiden easily gets a good groom by reciting this hymn; one desiring grain, wealth, growth and happiness attains it; moreover, the all-pervading, most compassionate Lord Shri Vishwanatha with Samba becomes pleased with one who worships him here.

Deep Meaning

By reciting this hymn a girl obtains a good husband. Wishing for prosperity, abundance and happiness, the most compassionate Lord Vishvanatha, with Parvati, becomes pleased with the one who worships him here.

Verse 11

Sanskrit

काशीपीठाधिनाथेन महेश्वरेण ग्रथिता शङ्कराचार्यभिक्षुणा । स्तोत्रमाला शिवार्पिता ॥

Transliteration

kāśīpīṭhādhināthena maheśvareṇa grathitā śaṅkarācāryabhikṣuṇā | stotramālā śivārpitā ||

Translation

Composed by Swami Maheshwarananda, Shankaracharya of the Kashi Pitha, this garland of hymns is offered to Shiva.
