Verse 1

Sanskrit

नमोऽस्त्वनन्तरूपाय नीलकण्ठ नमोऽस्तु ते । अविज्ञातस्वरूपाय कैवल्यायामृताय च ॥

Transliteration

namo 'stvanantarūpāya nīlakaṇṭha namo 'stu te | avijñātasvarūpāya kaivalyāyāmṛtāya ca ||

Translation

Salutations to you of infinite forms, O Nilakantha, salutations to you! Whose true nature is unknown, embodiment of liberation and immortality!

Deep Meaning

Brahma said: Salutations to you, Nilakantha, who have infinite forms; salutations to you. Your true form is not known to anyone. You are liberation and immortality.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

नान्तं देवा विजानन्ति यस्य तस्मै नमो नमः । यं न वाचः प्रशंसन्ति नमस्तस्मै चिदात्मने ॥

Transliteration

nāntaṃ devā vijānanti yasya tasmai namo namaḥ | yaṃ na vācaḥ praśaṃsanti namas tasmai cidātmane ||

Translation

Whose end even the gods do not know, to him salutations, salutations! Whom words cannot fully praise, salutations to him, the Self of consciousness!

Deep Meaning

Salutation to him whose end the gods do not know, whom speech cannot praise. Salutation to him, the consciousness of the Self.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

योगिनो यं हृदः कोशे प्रणिधानेन निश्चलाः । ज्योतीरूपं प्रपश्यन्ति तस्मै श्रीब्रह्मणे नमः ॥

Transliteration

yogino yaṃ hṛdaḥ kośe praṇidhānena niścalāḥ | jyotīrūpaṃ prapaśyanti tasmai śrībrahmaṇe namaḥ ||

Translation

Whom yogis, motionless in meditation, behold in the cave of the heart as the embodiment of light, to that glorious Brahman salutations!

Deep Meaning

Salutation to Shri Brahma, whom yogis see as the luminous form, steady in samadhi, within the lotus of the heart.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

कालात्पराय कालाय स्वेच्छया पुरुषाय च । गुणत्रयस्वरूपाय नमः प्रकृतिरूपिणे ॥

Transliteration

kālātparāya kālāya svecchayā puruṣāya ca | guṇatrayasvarūpāya prakṛtirūpiṇe ||

Translation

Beyond time, time itself, assuming the form of Purusha by your own will! Form of three gunas, embodiment of Prakriti!

Deep Meaning

Salutation to Shankara, beyond time and yet time itself, who by his own will takes the form of the Purusha, and who is the form of the three gunas and the form of Prakriti.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

सत्त्वरूपाय विष्णवे रजोरूपाय वेधसे । तमोरूपाय रुद्राय स्थितिसर्गान्तकारिणे ॥

Transliteration

sattvarūpāya viṣṇave rajorūpāya vedhase | tamorūpāya rudrāya sthitisargāntakāriṇe ||

Translation

As Vishnu of Sattva-form, as Brahma of Rajas-form, as Rudra of Tamas-form, cause of maintenance, creation and end!

Deep Meaning

Salutation to Vishnu, of the form of Sattva; to Vedhas, of the form of Rajas; to Rudra, of the form of Tamas, who brings about the sustenance, creation and destruction of the world.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

नमो नमः स्वरूपाय पञ्चबुद्धीन्द्रियात्मने । क्षित्यादिपञ्चरूपाय नमस्ते विषयात्मने ॥

Transliteration

namo namaḥ svarūpāya pañcabuddhīndriyātmane | kṣityādipañcarūpāya namaste viṣayātmane ||

Translation

Salutations, salutations to your nature as the five intellect-senses, five elements from earth onward, and five sense-objects!

Deep Meaning

Salutation, salutation to you, whose form is the five senses of knowledge and the self; salutation to you, whose form is the five elements of earth and the rest, and whose self is the objects of the senses.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

नमो ब्रह्माण्डरूपाय तदन्तर्वर्तिने नमः । अर्वाचीनपराचीनविश्वरूपाय ते नमः ॥

Transliteration

namo brahmāṇḍarūpāya tadantarvartine namaḥ | arvācīnaparācīnaviśvarūpāya namaḥ ||

Translation

Salutations to the form of the cosmic egg and to him dwelling within it! Salutations to the recent and ancient form of the universe!

Deep Meaning

Salutation to you, whose form is the universe; salutation to you, who dwell within the universe; salutation to you, of the form of the universe, both recent and ancient.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

अचिन्त्यनित्यरूपाय सदसत्पतये नमः । नमस्ते भक्तकृपया स्वेच्छाविष्कृतविग्रह ॥

Transliteration

acintyanityarūpāya sadasatpataye namaḥ | namaste bhaktakṛpayā svecchāviṣkṛtavigraha ||

Translation

Salutations to him of incomprehensible, eternal form, lord of being and non-being! Salutations to you who manifest a form by your own will out of grace for devotees!

Deep Meaning

Salutation to you, the inconceivable and eternal form, the lord of existence and non-existence. Salutation to you, who out of compassion for devotees assumes a form of your own will.

Verse 9

Sanskrit

तव निःश्वसितं वेदास्तव वेदोऽखिलं जगत् । विश्वभूतानि ते पादः शिरो द्यौः समवर्तत ॥

Transliteration

tava niḥśvasitaṃ vedās tava vedo 'khilaṃ jagat | viśvabhūtāni te pādaḥ śiro dyauḥ samavartata ||

Translation

Your breath is the Vedas, your Veda is the whole universe; all beings of the world are your feet, the sky became your head.

Deep Meaning

The Vedas are your breath, and the whole world is your form. The living beings of the universe are your feet, the sky is your head.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

नाभ्या आसीदन्तरिक्षं लोमानि च वनस्पतिः । चन्द्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यस्तव प्रभो ॥

Transliteration

nābhyā āsīd antarikṣaṃ lomāni ca vanaspatiḥ | candramā manaso jātaś cakṣoḥ sūryas tava prabho ||

Translation

From your navel came the firmament, your bodily hairs are plants; the moon was born from your mind, the sun from your eyes, O Lord!

Deep Meaning

Space is from your navel, the plants from your hair, the moon from your mind, and the sun, O Lord, from your eye.

Verse 11

Sanskrit

त्वमेव सर्वं त्वयि देव सर्वं सर्वस्तुतिस्तव्य इह त्वमेव । ईश त्वया वास्यमिदं हि सर्वं नमोऽस्तु भूयोऽपि नमो नमस्ते ॥

Transliteration

tvam eva sarvaṃ tvayi deva sarvaṃ sarvastutistavya iha tvam eva | īśa tvayā vāsyam idaṃ hi sarvaṃ namo 'stu bhūyo 'pi namo namaste ||

Translation

You alone are everything, in you O God is everything; you alone are to be praised by all hymns here! O Lord, by you all this is pervaded; salutations be again and again, salutations to you!

Deep Meaning

You are everything; in you is everything; you alone are to be praised by all praises. O Lord, all this is pervaded by you. Salutation, again and again, salutation to you.
