Verse 1

Sanskrit

जय शङ्कर शान्त शशाङ्करुचे रुचिरार्थद सर्वद सर्वशुचे । शुचिदत्तगृहीतमहोपहृते हृतभक्तजनोद्धततापतते ॥

Transliteration

jaya śaṅkara śānta śaśāṅkaruce rucirārthada sarvada sarvaśuce | śucidattagṛhītamahopahṛte hṛtabhaktajanoddhatatāpatate ||

Translation

Victory, O Shankara, peaceful, radiant as the moon, bestower of desired objects, all-giver, pure in all! Accepting great offerings given by the pure, destroyer of the intense burning afflictions of your devotees!

Deep Meaning

Brihaspati said: Victory to Shankara, calm and white like the moon, who gives beautiful objects and all desires, who is pure, who accepts the great offerings of pure devotees, and who removes the great sorrows that have fallen on devotees.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

ततसर्वहृदम्बर वरद नते नतवृजिनमहावनदाहकृते । कृतविविधचरित्रतनो सुतनो तनुविशिखविशोषणधैर्यनिधे ॥

Transliteration

tatasarvahṛdambara varada nate natavṛjinamahāvanadāhakṛte | kṛtavividhacaritratano sutano tanuviśikhavisoṣaṇadhairyanidhe ||

Translation

Pervading the sky of every heart, bestower of boons on the bowed, wild-fire burning the great forest of devotees' sins! Of beautiful body performing diverse plays, drying up the arrows of Kamadeva, O treasure of fortitude!

Deep Meaning

You pervade the sky of all hearts, you grant boons to those who bow, you are the forest fire that burns the great forest of sins of those who bow, you perform many kinds of sports through your body, you are beautiful in form, and you are the treasure of courage.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

निधनादिविवर्जित कृतनतिकृत् कृतिविहितमनोरथपन्नगभृत् । नमभर्तृसुतार्पितवामवपुः स्ववपुः परिपूरितसर्वजगत् ॥

Transliteration

nidhanādivivarjita kṛtanatikṛt kṛtavihitamanorathapannagabhṛt | namabhartṛsutārpitavāmavapuḥ svavapuḥ paripūritasarvajagat ||

Translation

Free from destruction and modifications, rendering those who bow free from death, fulfilling the wishes of the virtuous, wearing serpents! Whose left half is given to the mountain-king's daughter, pervading the whole universe with your own form!

Deep Meaning

You are beyond death and the other changes, and you grant the wishes of devotees who bow to you. You bear serpents as ornaments, Uma is joined to your left half, and you pervade the whole world with your own all-pervading form.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

त्रिजगन्मयरूप विरूप सुदृग् दृगुदञ्चनकुञ्चनकृतहुतभुक् । भव भूतपते प्रमथैकपते पतितेष्वपि दत्तकरप्रसृते ॥

Transliteration

trijaganmayarūpa virūpa sudṛg dṛgudañcanakuñcanakṛtahutabhuk | bhava bhūtapate pramathaikapate patiteṣv api dattakaraprasṛte ||

Translation

Whose form is the three worlds yet formless, of beautiful eyes, creating fire by opening and closing eyes! O Bhava, Lord of beings, sole master of Pramathas, extending your helping hand even to the fallen!

Deep Meaning

The three worlds are your form, yet you are beyond these forms. Your gaze is beautiful. By opening and closing your eyes you create and destroy the world. You produced Agni. You alone are the protector and lord of the Pramatha hosts, and you extend your hand of boon even to those fallen in sin.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

प्रसृताखिलभूतलसंवरण प्रणवध्वनिसौधसुधांशुधर । धरराजकुमारिकया परया परितः परितुष्ट नतोऽस्मि शिव ॥

Transliteration

prasṛtākhilabhūtalasaṃvaraṇa praṇavadhvanisaudhasudhāṃśudhara | dhararājakumārikayā parayā paritaḥ parituṣṭa nato 'smi śiva ||

Translation

Removing the veil spread over the whole earth, bearing the moon in the nectarous mansion of Pranava's sound! Fully satisfied everywhere by Parvati, mountain-king's daughter, I bow, O Shiva!

Deep Meaning

You remove the covering of the whole universe and dwell in the palace of the nectar-moon of the sound of Pranava. You bear the moon in the forehead. Parvati is always pleased with you. I bow to you, Shiva.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

शिव देव गिरीश महेश विभो विभवप्रद गिरिश शिवेश मृड । मृडयोडुपतिध्र जगत् त्रितयं कृतयन्त्रणभक्तिविघातकृताम् ॥

Transliteration

śiva deva girīśa maheśa vibho vibhavaprada giriśa śiveśa mṛḍa | mṛḍayoḍupatidhra jagat tritayaṃ kṛtayantraṇabhaktivighātakṛtām ||

Translation

O Shiva, God, Lord of mountains, Mahesha, all-pervading, giver of wealth, resting on Kailasa, Lord of Parvati, compassionate! Bearer of the moon, punish those who obstruct devotion, make happy the three worlds!

Deep Meaning

Shiva, god, lord of Girisha and Mahesha, all-pervading lord who gives prosperity, who rests on Kailasa, who gives happiness to all, the bearer of the moon: make the three worlds happy, and punish the wicked who obstruct devotion.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

न कृतान्तत एष विभेमि हर प्रहराशु महाघममोघमते । न मतान्तरमन्यदवैमि शिवं शिवपादनतेः प्रणतोऽस्मि ततः ॥

Transliteration

na kṛtāntata eṣa vibhemi hara praharāśu mahāgham amoghamate | na matāntaram anyad avaimi śivaṃ śivapādanateḥ praṇato 'smi tataḥ ||

Translation

O Hara, I do not fear even Death; swiftly destroy my great sins, O unfailing intellect! I know no other beneficial thought than bowing to Shiva's feet, therefore I bow to your feet!

Deep Meaning

I do not fear death. Hara, quickly destroy my great sins, O one of unfailing mind. I know no other doctrine that is auspicious except Shiva. I bow with my head at Shiva's feet.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

विततेऽत्र जगत्यखिलेऽघहरं हरतोषणमेव परं गुणवत् । गुणहीनमहीनमहावलयं प्रलयान्तकमीश नतोऽस्मि ततः ॥

Transliteration

vitate 'tra jagaty akhile 'ghaharaṃ haratoṣaṇam eva paraṃ guṇavat | guṇahīnam ahīnamahāvalayaṃ pralayāntakam īśa nato 'smi tataḥ ||

Translation

In this whole vast world, pleasing Hara alone removes sins and is supremely virtuous; beyond attributes, wearing the serpent-king as a bracelet, ender at dissolution, O Lord, I bow to you!

Deep Meaning

To please Shiva is the one thing that destroys all sins in this vast world, and it is the best of all virtuous things. You are beyond the three gunas, you wear Vasuki as a great bracelet, and you destroy all at dissolution. Therefore I bow to you.

Verse 9

Sanskrit

इति स्तुत्वा महादेवं विररामाङ्गिरः सुतः । व्यतरच्च महेशानः स्तुत्या तुष्टो वरान् बहून् ॥

Transliteration

iti stutvā mahādevaṃ virarāmāṅgiraḥ sutaḥ | vyatarac ca maheśānaḥ stutyā tuṣṭo varān bahūn ||

Translation

Having thus praised Mahadeva, the son of Angiras (Brihaspati) fell silent; and Maheshana, pleased by the hymn, granted many boons -

Having thus praised Mahadeva, Brihaspati fell silent. Pleased by the praise, Mahesha granted him many boons.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

बृहता तपसाऽनेन बृहतां पतिरेध्यहो । नाम्ना बृहस्पतिरिति ग्रहेष्वर्य्यो भव द्विज ॥

Transliteration

bṛhatā tapasā 'nena bṛhatāṃ patir edhy aho | nāmnā bṛhaspatir iti graheṣv aryyo bhava dvija ||

Translation

"By this great austerity become the master of the great ones; be worshipped among planets by the name Brihaspati, O twice-born!"

Deep Meaning

Because you did great tapas, you will be lord of the great ones, and you shall be worshipped among the planets as Brihaspati, O twice-born.

Verse 11

Sanskrit

अस्य स्तोत्रस्य पठनादपि वागुदियाच्च यम् । तस्य स्यात् संस्कृता वाणी त्रिभिर्वर्षैस्त्रिकालतः ॥

Transliteration

asya stotrasya paṭhanād api vāg udiyāc ca yam | tasya syāt saṃskṛtā vāṇī tribhir varṣais trikālataḥ ||

Translation

By reciting this hymn, within three years at the three daily junctures, speech shall dawn within him and his speech shall become refined.

Deep Meaning

A person who recites this hymn in the three periods for three years, the speech from him becomes refined, and his words are made pure.

Verse 12

Sanskrit

अस्य स्तोत्रस्य पठनान्नियतं मम संनिधौ । न दुर्वृत्तौ प्रवृत्तिः स्यादविवेकवतां नृणाम् ॥

Transliteration

asya stotrasya paṭhanān niyataṃ mama sannidhau | na durvṛttau pravṛttiḥ syād avivekavatāṃ nṛṇām ||

Translation

By constant recitation of this hymn in my presence, even unwise people will not incline toward wicked conduct.

Deep Meaning

In my presence, the thought of wrongdoing does not arise in people who recite this hymn, even if they lack discernment.

Verse 13

Sanskrit

अदः स्तोत्रं पठञ्जन्तुर्जातु पीडां ग्रहोद्भवाम् । न प्राप्स्यति ततो जप्यमिदं स्तोत्रं ममाग्रतः ॥

Transliteration

adaḥ stotraṃ paṭhañ jantur jātu pīḍāṃ grahodbhavām | na prāpsyati tato japyam idaṃ stotraṃ mamāgrataḥ ||

Translation

A person reciting this hymn will never suffer pain born of planets; therefore this hymn should be chanted before me.

Deep Meaning

A person who recites this hymn is never troubled by pain born of the planets. Therefore this hymn should be recited in my presence.

Verse 14

Sanskrit

नित्यं प्रातः समुत्थाय यः पठिष्यति मानवः । इमां स्तुतिं हरिष्येऽहं तस्य बाधाः सुदारुणाः ॥

Transliteration

nityaṃ prātaḥ samutthāya yaḥ paṭhiṣyati mānavaḥ | imāṃ stutiṃ hariṣye 'haṃ tasya bādhāḥ sudāruṇāḥ ||

Translation

Whatever man rising early in the morning daily recites this hymn, I shall remove his most severe afflictions.

Deep Meaning

Whoever rises at dawn every day and recites this hymn, I will remove the terrible troubles from him.

Verse 15

Sanskrit

त्वत्प्रतिष्ठितलिङ्गस्य पूजां कृत्वा प्रयत्नतः । इमां स्तुतिमधीयानो मनोवाञ्छामवाप्स्यति ॥

Transliteration

tvatpratiṣṭhitalingasya pūjāṃ kṛtvā prayatnataḥ | imāṃ stutim adhīyāno manovāñchām avāpsyati ||

Translation

Having carefully worshipped the Linga established by you, he who reads this hymn shall attain his heart's desire.

Deep Meaning

A person who worships the linga you installed, with effort, and recites this hymn, will obtain the desired fulfilment.
