Verse 1

Sanskrit

जगद्गुरो नमस्तुभ्यं शिवाय शिवदाय च । योगीन्द्राणां च योगीन्द्र गुरूणां गुरवे नमः ॥

Transliteration

jagadguro namas tubhyaṃ śivāya śivadāya ca | yogīndrāṇāṃ ca yogīndra gurūṇāṃ gurave namaḥ ||

Translation

Salutations to you, O Guru of the world, Shiva, the bestower of auspiciousness! Lord of the lords of yogis, Guru of gurus, salutations!

Deep Meaning

Asita said: O teacher of the world, salutation to you, who are Shiva and the giver of welfare. Salutation to the teacher of the gurus of yogis, the lord of yogis.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

मृत्योर्मृत्युस्वरूपेण मृत्युसंसारखण्डन । मृत्योरीश मृत्युबीज मृत्युञ्जय नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

Transliteration

mṛtyor mṛtyusvarūpeṇa mṛtyusaṃsārakhaṇḍana | mṛtyor īśa mṛtyubīja mṛtyuñjaya namo 'stu te ||

Translation

Destroyer of the mortal world of birth and death as the very death of death! Lord of death, seed of death, conqueror of death, salutations be to you!

Deep Meaning

You are the death of death, the destroyer of the cycle of death and worldly existence, the lord of death, the seed of death. O conqueror of death, salutation to you.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

कालरूपं कलयतां कालकालेश कारण । कालादतीत कालस्य कालकाल नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

Transliteration

kālarūpaṃ kalayatāṃ kālakāleśa kāraṇa | kālād atīta kālasya kālakāla namo 'stu te ||

Translation

Form of time for those who reckon, lord of the time of time, cause! Beyond time even of time, time of time, salutations be to you!

Deep Meaning

You are the form of time for those who measure time, the lord of time, the cause, the time of time, beyond time and the time of time. Salutation to you.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

गुणातीत गुणाधार गुणबीज गुणात्मक । गुणीश गुणिनां बीज गुणिनां गुरवे नमः ॥

Transliteration

guṇātīta guṇādhāra guṇabīja guṇātmaka | guṇīśa guṇināṃ bīja guṇināṃ gurave namaḥ ||

Translation

Beyond gunas, support of gunas, seed of gunas, embodiment of gunas! Lord of the virtuous, seed of the virtuous, guru of the virtuous, salutations!

Deep Meaning

You are beyond the qualities, the support of the qualities, the seed of the qualities and the essence of the qualities. Lord of the qualified, seed of the qualified, salutation to the teacher of the qualified.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

ब्रह्मस्वरूप ब्रह्मज्ञ ब्रह्मभावनतत्पर । ब्रह्मबीजस्वरूपेण ब्रह्मबीज नमोऽस्तु ते ॥

Transliteration

brahmasvarūpa brahmajña brahmabhāvanatatpara | brahmabījasvarūpeṇa brahmabīja namo 'stu te ||

Translation

Embodiment of Brahman, knower of Brahman, intent on contemplation of Brahman! As the embodiment of the seed of Brahman, O seed of Brahman, salutations be to you!

Deep Meaning

You are the form of Brahman, the knower of Brahman, intent on meditation on Brahman, the seed of Brahman in form. Salutation to you.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

इति स्तुत्वा शिवं नत्वा पुरस्तस्थौ मुनीश्वरः । दीनवत् साश्रुनेत्रश्च पुलकाञ्चितविग्रहः ॥

Transliteration

iti stutvā śivaṃ natvā puras tasthau munīśvaraḥ | dīnavat sāśrunetraś ca pulakāñcitavigrahaḥ ||

Translation

Having thus praised and bowed to Shiva, the chief of sages stood before him, like a helpless person, with tearful eyes, his body trembling with thrilling emotion.

Deep Meaning

Having praised Shiva and bowed to him, the lord of sages Asita stood before him, humbly, with tears in his eyes and his body thrilled with joy.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

असितेन कृतं स्तोत्रं भक्तियुक्तश्च यः पठेत् । वर्षमेकं हविष्याशी शङ्करस्य महात्मनः ॥

Transliteration

asitena kṛtaṃ stotraṃ bhaktiyuktaś ca yaḥ paṭhet | varṣam ekaṃ haviṣyāśī śaṅkarasya mahātmanaḥ ||

Translation

He who, endowed with devotion, recites this hymn composed by Asita of the great-souled Shankara for one year eating sacrificial food -

Deep Meaning

A person who recites this hymn made by Asita with devotion, eating only offered food for one year, to the great soul Shankara.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

स लभेद् वैष्णवं पुत्रं ज्ञानिनं चिरजीविनम् । भवेद्धनाढ्यो दुःखी च मूको भवति पण्डितः ॥

Transliteration

sa labhed vaiṣṇavaṃ putraṃ jñāninaṃ cirajīvinam | bhaved dhanāḍhyo duḥkhī ca mūko bhavati paṇḍitaḥ ||

Translation

He obtains a wise, long-lived son devoted to Vishnu; the distressed becomes wealthy, and the mute becomes a scholar.

Deep Meaning

Such a person obtains a son who is devoted to Vishnu, wise and long-lived. A man who is poor becomes rich, a man who is unhappy becomes happy, and a mute man becomes learned. (The commentary covers verses 7 and 8 together.)

Verse 9

Sanskrit

अभार्यो लभते भार्यां सुशीलां च पतिव्रताम् । इहलोके सुखं भुक्त्वा यात्यन्ते शिवसंनिधिम् ॥

Transliteration

abhāryo labhate bhāryāṃ suśīlāṃ ca pativratām | ihaloke sukhaṃ bhuktvā yāty ante śivasannidhim ||

Translation

The wifeless man obtains a virtuous and devoted wife; having enjoyed happiness in this world, at the end he goes to the proximity of Shiva.

Deep Meaning

A man without a wife obtains a virtuous and faithful wife. After enjoying happiness in this world, he goes at the end to the presence of Shiva.
