Verse 1

Sanskrit

सौराष्ट्रदेशे विशदेऽतिरम्ये ज्योतिर्मयं चन्द्रकलावतंसम् । भक्तिप्रदानाय कृपावतीर्णं तं सोमनाथं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ १ ॥

Transliteration

saurāṣṭradeśe viśade 'tiramye jyotirmayaṃ candrakalāvataṃsam | bhaktipradānāya kṛpāvatīrṇaṃ taṃ somanāthaṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadye || 1 ||

Translation

In the pure, exceedingly charming land of Saurashtra, luminous, crowned with the crescent moon, descended out of compassion to grant devotion - I take refuge in that Somanatha.

Deep Meaning

I take refuge in the jyotirlinga form of the glorious Somanatha, who in compassion descended in the very beautiful and pure Saurashtra region to grant devotion, and who wears the moon as his ornament.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

श्रीशैलशृङ्गे विबुधातिसङ्गे तुलाद्रितुङ्गेऽपि मुदा वसन्तम् । तमर्जुनं मल्लिकपूर्वमेकं नमामि संसारसमुद्रसेतुम् ॥ २ ॥

Transliteration

śrīśailaśṛṅge vibudhātisaṅge tulādrituṅge 'pi mudā vasantam | tam arjunaṃ mallikapūrvam ekaṃ namāmi saṃsārasamudrasetum || 2 ||

Translation

On the peak of Shri Shaila, in the great gathering of the wise, dwelling joyfully even higher than the loftiest of mountains - to that one Mallikarjuna, the bridge over the ocean of worldly existence, I bow.

Deep Meaning

I bow to the one Lord Mallikarjuna, who dwells gladly on the summit of Shrishaila, higher than the mountains that set the standard of height, where the gods often assemble, and who is a bridge to carry people across the ocean of worldly existence.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

अवन्तिकायां विहितावतारं मुक्तिप्रदानाय च सज्जनानाम् । अकालमृत्योः परिरक्षणार्थं वन्दे महाकालमहासुरेशम् ॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration

avantikāyāṃ vihitāvatāraṃ muktipradānāya ca sajjanānām | akālamṛtyoḥ parirakṣaṇārthaṃ vande mahākālam mahāsureśam || 3 ||

Translation

Who has taken incarnation in Avantika to grant liberation to the virtuous - for protection from untimely death, I bow to Mahakala, the great lord of the gods.

Deep Meaning

I bow to the great Shiva known as Mahakala, who took birth in Avantipuri (Ujjain) to grant liberation to the holy, and I bow to him to be saved from untimely death.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

कावेरिकानर्मदयोः पवित्रे समागमे सज्जनतारणाय । सदैव मान्धातृपुरे वसन्तं मोङ्कारमीशं शिवमेकमीडे ॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration

kāverikānarmadayoḥ pavitre samāgame sajjanatāraṇāya | sadaiva māndhātṛpure vasantaṃ mo'ṅkāram īśaṃ śivam ekam īḍe || 4 ||

Translation

At the sacred confluence of the Kaveri and Narmada, for carrying good people across, dwelling forever in the city of Mandhata - I praise that one auspicious lord, Omkara.

Deep Meaning

I praise the one auspicious Shiva, Omkareshvara, who always dwells in the city of Mandhata near the holy confluence of the Kaveri and the Narmada, to carry the virtuous across the ocean of worldly life.

Verse 5

पूर्वोत्तरे प्रज्वलिकानिधाने सदा वसन्तं गिरिजासमेतम् । सुरासुराराधितपादपद्मं श्रीवैद्यनाथं तमहं नमामि ॥ ५ ॥

Transliteration

pūrvottare prajvalikānidhāne sadā vasantaṃ girijāsametam | surāsurārādhitapādapadmaṃ śrīvaidyanāthaṃ tam ahaṃ namāmi || 5 ||

Translation

In the north-east, within the repository of blazing fire, dwelling forever together with Girija, his lotus feet worshipped by gods and demons - to that Shri Vaidyanatha I bow.

I bow to Vaidyanatha, who dwells always in the north-eastern cremation ground with Girija, and whose lotus feet are worshipped by gods and demons.

याम्ये सदङ्गे नगरेऽतिरम्ये विभूषिताङ्गं विविधैश्च भोगैः । सद्भक्तिमुक्तिप्रदमीशमेकं श्रीनागनाथं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ ६ ॥

Transliteration

yāmye sadaṅge nagare 'tiramye vibhūṣitāṅgaṃ vividhaiś ca bhogaiḥ | sadbhaktimuktipradam īśam ekaṃ śrīnāganāthaṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadye || 6 ||

Translation

In the exceedingly charming southern city of Sadanga, his body adorned and endowed with various enjoyments, the one lord who alone grants true devotion and liberation - I take refuge in that Shri Naganatha.

I take refuge in the Lord Naganatha, who is rich in enjoyments in the beautiful southern city of Sadanga, adorned with lovely ornaments, and who alone gives true devotion and liberation.

Verse 7

महाद्रिपार्श्वे च तटे रमन्तं सम्पूज्यमानं सततं मुनीन्द्रैः । सुरासुरैर्यक्षमहोरगाद्यैः केदारमीशं शिवमेकमीडे ॥ ७ ॥

Transliteration

mahādripārśve ca taṭe ramantaṃ sampūjyamānaṃ satataṃ munīndraiḥ | surāsurair yakṣamahoragādyaiḥ kedāram īśaṃ śivam ekam īḍe || 7 ||

Translation

Dwelling by the side of the great mountain, on its slope, ever worshipped by the great sages, by gods, demons, yakshas, great serpents and others - I praise Kedara, the one auspicious lord.

I praise the one auspicious Lord Kedarnatha, who always dwells on the Kedara peak beside the great mountain Himalaya, worshipped by sages, gods, demons, yakshas and great serpents.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

सह्याद्रिशीर्षे विमले वसन्तं गोदावरीतीरपवित्रदेशे । यद्दर्शनात् पातकमाशु नाशं प्रयाति तं त्र्यम्बकमीशमीडे ॥ ८ ॥

Transliteration

sahyādriśīrṣe vimale vasantaṃ godāvarītīrapavitradeśe | yaddarśanāt pātakam āśu nāśaṃ prayāti taṃ tryambakam īśam īḍe || 8 ||

Translation

Dwelling on the pure peak of the Sahya mountain, in the sacred land on the bank of the Godavari, by seeing whom sin quickly goes to its destruction - I praise that lord Tryambaka.

Deep Meaning

I praise Tryambakeshvara, who dwells on the pure peak of the Sahyadri in the holy land on the banks of the Godavari, by whose sight sin is immediately destroyed.

Verse 9

सुताम्रपर्णीजलराशियोगे निबध्य सेतुं विशिखैरसंख्यैः । श्रीरामचन्द्रेण समर्पितं तं रामेश्वराख्यं नियतं नमामि ॥ ९ ॥

Transliteration

sutāmraparṇījalarāśiyoge nibadhya setuṃ viśikhair asaṃkhyaiḥ | śrīrāmacandreṇa samarpitaṃ taṃ rāmeśvarākhyaṃ niyataṃ namāmi || 9 ||

Translation

At the meeting of the Tamraparni's waters with the ocean, having bound a bridge with countless arrows, established by Shri Ramachandra himself - to him, named Rameshvara, I constantly bow.

Deep Meaning

I reverently bow to Rameshvara, established by Shri Rama by building a bridge with many arrows at the confluence of the Tamraparni and the ocean.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

यं डाकिनीशाकिनिकासमाजे सदैव निषेव्यमाणं पिशिताशनैश्च । भीमादिपदप्रसिद्धं तं शङ्करं भक्तहितं नमामि ॥ १० ॥

Transliteration

yaṃ ḍākinīśākinikāsamāje sadaiva niṣevyamāṇaṃ piśitāśanaiś ca | bhīmādipadaprasiddhaṃ taṃ śaṅkaraṃ bhaktahitaṃ namāmi || 10 ||

Translation

Who is ever served in the gathering of Dakinis and Shakinis, and by the flesh-eating spirits; famed by the name beginning with Bhima - to that Shankara, benefactor of devotees, I bow.

Deep Meaning

I bow to the Lord Bhimashankara, who is always served by ghosts in the groups of the Dakini and Shakini, the benefactor of devotees.

Verse 11

Sanskrit

सानन्दमानन्दवने वसन्तमानन्दकन्दं हतपापवृन्दम् । वाराणसीनाथमनाथनाथं श्रीविश्वनाथं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ ११ ॥

Transliteration

sānandam ānandavane vasantam ānandakandaṃ hatapāpavṛndam | vārāṇasīnātham anāthanāthaṃ śrīviśvanāthaṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadye || 11 ||

Translation

Dwelling blissfully in Anandavana, the very root of bliss, the destroyer of the mass of sins, lord of Varanasi, lord of the lordless - I take refuge in that Shri Vishvanatha.

Deep Meaning

I take refuge in the Lord of Kashi, Shri Vishvanatha, the lord of the helpless, who is himself the root of bliss, dwells joyfully in the forest of bliss (Kashi), and destroys the mass of sins.

Verse 12

Sanskrit

इलापुरे रम्यविशालकेऽस्मिन् समुल्लसन्तं च जगद्वरेण्यम् । वन्दे महोदारतरस्वभावं घृष्णेश्वराख्यं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥ १२ ॥

Transliteration

ilāpure ramyaviśālake 'smin samullasantaṃ ca jagadvareṇyam | vande mahodāratarasvabhāvaṃ ghṛṣṇeśvarākhyaṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadye || 12 ||

Translation

Shining forth in this beautiful, spacious Ilapura, chosen by the whole world; I bow to the one of most generous nature, named Ghrishneshvara, and take refuge in him.

Deep Meaning

I take refuge in the luminous Lord Shiva named Ghrishneshwara, who is worshipped by the whole world from his beautiful temple at Ilapura, and whose nature is most generous.

Verse 13

Sanskrit

ज्योतिर्मयद्वादशलिङ्गकानां शिवात्मनां प्रोक्तमिदं क्रमेण । स्तोत्रं पठित्वा मनुजोऽतिभक्त्या फलं तदालोक्य निजं भजेच्च ॥ १३ ॥

Transliteration

jyotirmayadvādaśaliṅgakānāṃ śivātmanāṃ proktam idaṃ krameṇa | stotraṃ paṭhitvā manujo 'tibhaktyā phalaṃ tad ālokya nijaṃ bhajec ca || 13 ||

Translation

This hymn to the twelve luminous lingas, each of the nature of Shiva, has been declared in order; a person, having recited this hymn with great devotion, beholding it, attains his own due fruit.

Deep Meaning

If a person devoutly recites this hymn of the twelve luminous Shiva lingas in the order stated, he obtains the fruit that comes from seeing them.
