Verse 1

Sanskrit

नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय भस्माङ्गरागाय नित्याय शुद्धाय दिगम्बराय मन्दाकिनीसलिलचन्दनचर्चिताय महेश्वराय । तस्मै 'न'काराय नमः शिवाय ॥ १ ॥

Transliteration

nāgendrahārāya trilocanāya bhasmāṅgarāgāya nityāya śuddhāya digambarāya mandākinīsalilacandanacarcitāya maheśvarāya | tasmai 'na'kārāya namaḥ śivāya || 1 ||

Translation

To him whose garland is the king of serpents, three-eyed, whose bodily paste is ash, eternal, pure, clad in the directions, anointed with the Mandakini's water and sandal, Maheshvara - to him, of the form of the syllable "na," salutation to Shiva.

Deep Meaning

Salutations to Maheshvara, the pure and imperishable Shiva of the form of the syllable 'na', whose garland is of serpents, who has three eyes, whose bodily unguent is ash, and whose garment is the directions themselves, that is, who is unclothed.

मन्दाकिनीसलिलचन्दनचर्चिताय नन्दीश्वरप्रमथनाथमहेश्वराय मन्दारपुष्पबहुपुष्पसुपूजिताय तस्मै 'म'काराय नमः शिवाय ॥ २ ॥

Transliteration

mandākinīsalilacandanacarcitāya nandīśvarapramathanāthamaheśvarāya mandārapuṣpabahupuṣpasupūjitāya tasmai 'ma'kārāya namaḥ śivāya || 2 ||

Translation

To him anointed with the Mandakini's water and sandal, to Maheshvara, lord of Nandishvara and master of the Pramathas, well worshipped with mandara flowers and many other flowers - to him, of the form of the syllable "ma," salutation to Shiva.

Salutations to Shiva of the form of the syllable 'ma', who is worshipped with Ganga water and sandal, who is beautifully worshipped with mandara and other flowers, who is the lord of Nandi and of the Pramatha hosts.

शिवाय गौरीवदनाब्जवृन्दसूर्याय दक्षाध्वरनाशकाय । श्रीनीलकण्ठाय वृषध्वजाय तस्मै 'शि'काराय नमः शिवाय ॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration

śivāya gaurīvadanābjavṛndasūryāya dakṣādhvaranāśakāya | śrīnīlakaṇṭhāya vṛṣadhvajāya tasmai 'śi'kārāya namaḥ śivāya || 3 ||

Translation

To the auspicious one, the sun to the cluster of Gauri's lotus face, the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, glorious blue-throated one, bull-bannered - to him, of the form of the syllable "shi," salutation to Shiva.

Deep Meaning

Salutations to Nilakantha, the beautiful Shiva of the form of the syllable 'shi', who is auspiciousness itself, who is the sun to the lotus face of Gauri, who destroyed Daksha's sacrifice, and whose banner bears the bull.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

वसिष्ठकुम्भोद्भवगौतमार्यमुनीन्द्रदेवार्चितशेखराय । चन्द्रार्कवैश्वानरलोचनाय तस्मै 'व'काराय नमः शिवाय ॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration

vasiṣṭhakumbhodbhavagautamāryamunīndradevārcitaśekharāya candrārkavaiśvānaralocanāya yakṣasvarūpāya tasmai 'va'kārāya namaḥ śivāya || 4 ||

Translation

To him whose crown is worshipped by Vasishtha, Kumbhodbhava, the noble Gautama and the other great sages and gods, whose eyes are the moon, sun and fire, of the form of a Yaksha - to him, of the form of the syllable "va," salutation to Shiva.

Salutations to Shiva of the form of the syllable 'va', whose crown is worshipped by Vasishtha, Kumbhodbhava, Gautama and the other great sages, and by the gods, and whose eyes are the moon, the sun and fire.

Verse 5

यक्षस्वरूपाय जटाधराय पिनाकहस्ताय सनातनाय । दिव्याय देवाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै 'य'काराय नमः शिवाय ॥ ५ ॥

Transliteration

jaṭādharāya pinākahastāya sanātanāya | divyāya devāya digambarāya tasmai 'ya'kārāya namaḥ śivāya || 5 ||

Translation

To him who bears matted locks, the Pinaka in his hand, eternal, divine, a god, clad in the directions - to him, of the form of the syllable "ya," salutation to Shiva.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

पञ्चाक्षरमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ । शिवलोकमवाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते ॥ ६ ॥

Transliteration

pañcākṣaram idaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭhec chivasannidhau | śivalokam avāpnoti śivena saha modate || 6 ||

Translation

Whoever recites this sacred Panchakshara in the presence of Shiva attains the world of Shiva and rejoices there together with Shiva.
