Verse 1

Sanskrit

एको हि रुद्रो न द्वितीयाय तस्थुर्य इमाँल्लोकानीशत ईशनीभिः । प्रत्यङ् जनांस्तिष्ठति संचुकोचान्तकाले संसृज्य विश्वा भुवनानि गोपाः ॥

Transliteration

eko hi rudro na dvitīyāya tasthur ya imāṃllokānīśata īśanībhiḥ | pratyaṅ janāṃs tiṣṭhati saṃcukocāntakāle saṃsṛjya viśvā bhuvanāni gopāḥ ||

Translation

Rudra alone is one, not standing for a second - he who rules over these worlds by his own ruling powers. He stands facing all creatures; having brought the worlds together, he, their protector, draws them back in at the time of ending.

Deep Meaning

Rudra alone is one. Through his own manifold powers of rule, which are his nature, he governs all these worlds. The wise did not take refuge in another when they determined the cause of the world. That supreme Self dwells within all beings. Having created all the worlds and protected them, the supreme Lord gathers them all back at the time of dissolution.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

यो देवानां प्रभवश्चोद्भवश्च विश्वाधिपो रुद्रो महर्षिः । हिरण्यगर्भं जनयामास पूर्वं स नो बुद्ध्या शुभया संयुनक्तु ॥

Transliteration

yo devānāṃ prabhavaś codbhavaś ca viśvādhipo rudro maharṣiḥ | hiraṇyagarbhaṃ janayāmāsa pūrvaṃ sa no buddhyā śubhayā saṃyunaktu ||

Translation

He who is the origin and the arising of the gods, the lord of the universe, Rudra, the great seer, who first brought forth Hiranyagarbha - may he unite us with an auspicious understanding.

Deep Meaning

May that supreme Lord, Rudra, who is the cause of the origin and growth of the gods such as Indra, who is the lord of all and the great knower, who first brought forth Hiranyagarbha, join us with auspicious understanding.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

या ते रुद्र शिवा तनूरघोरापापकाशिनी । तया नस्तनुवा शन्तमया गिरिशन्ताभिचाकशीहि ॥

Transliteration

yā te rudra śivā tanūr aghorāpāpakāśinī | tayā nas tanuvā śantamayā giriśantābhicākaśīhi ||

Translation

O Rudra, with that auspicious, not-terrible, sin-dispelling body of yours, with that most peaceful body of yours, look kindly upon us, O granter of peace from the mountain.

Deep Meaning

O Rudra, your form that is free from terror, pure, luminous with merit and auspicious, is the form that dwells on the mountain and spreads happiness, O Shiva. With that supremely peaceful form, look upon us with grace.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

ततः परं ब्रह्मपरं बृहन्तं यथानिकायं सर्वभूतेषु गूढम् । विश्वस्यैकं परिवेष्टितारमीशं तं ज्ञात्वामृता भवन्ति ॥

Transliteration

tataḥ paraṃ brahma paraṃ bṛhantaṃ yathānikāyaṃ sarvabhūteṣu gūḍham | viśvasyaikaṃ pariveṣṭitāram īśaṃ taṃ jñātvāmṛtā bhavanti ||

Translation

Beyond that is the supreme Brahman, the vast one, hidden according to its abode within all beings - the one Lord who encompasses the universe; knowing him, they become immortal.

Deep Meaning

Knowing that supreme Lord, who lies beyond the aggregate of living beings described above, who is greater than Brahma, Hiranyagarbha, who is hidden in the bodies of all beings in accordance with their forms and who encompasses the whole universe on all sides, the wise become immortal.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

सर्वाननशिरोग्रीवः सर्वभूतगुहाशयः । सर्वव्यापी स भगवांस्तस्मात् सर्वगतः शिवः ॥

Transliteration

sarvānanaśirogrīvaḥ sarvabhūtaguhāśayaḥ | sarvavyāpī sa bhagavāṃs tasmāt sarvagataḥ śivaḥ ||

Translation

Having faces, heads and necks on every side, dwelling in the cave of every being's heart, all-pervading - that Lord is therefore Shiva, gone everywhere.

Deep Meaning

The Lord has faces, heads and necks in every direction. He dwells in the cave of the hearts of all beings and is all-pervading, so that the auspicious supreme Lord is present everywhere.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

महान् प्रभुर्वै पुरुषः सत्त्वस्यैष प्रवर्तकः । सुनिर्मलामिमां प्राप्तिमीशानो ज्योतिरव्ययः ॥

Transliteration

mahān prabhur vai puruṣaḥ sattvasyaiṣa pravartakaḥ | sunirmalām imāṃ prāptim īśāno jyotir avyayaḥ ||

Translation

Truly the great Lord, the Purusha, is the mover of this very existence; the ruler of this utterly pure attainment, the imperishable light.

Deep Meaning

Indeed, this great, capable one who rules over all, imperishable, self-luminous supreme Purusha, directs the mind toward the very pure gain of attaining him.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद्भूतं यच्च भव्यम् । उतामृतत्वस्येशानो यदन्नेनातिरोहति ॥

Transliteration

puruṣa evedaṃ sarvaṃ yad bhūtaṃ yac ca bhavyam | utāmṛtatvasyeśāno yad annenātirohati ||

Translation

The Purusha alone is all this, whatever has been and whatever is yet to be; and he is the lord of immortality, and of whatever grows further by means of food.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

सर्वतः पाणिपादं तत् सर्वतोऽक्षिशिरोमुखम् । सर्वतः श्रुतिमल्लोके सर्वमावृत्य तिष्ठति ॥

Transliteration

sarvataḥ pāṇipādaṃ tat sarvato 'kṣiśiromukham | sarvataḥ śrutimal loke sarvam āvṛtya tiṣṭhati ||

Translation

That one has hands and feet on every side, eyes, heads and faces on every side; possessed of hearing on every side in this world, it stands enveloping everything.

Deep Meaning

He has hands and feet in every direction, eyes, heads and mouths in every direction, and ears in every direction. He dwells encompassing all things on all sides in the universe.

Verse 9

Sanskrit

सर्वेन्द्रियगुणाभासं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितम् । सर्वस्य प्रभुमीशानं सर्वस्य शरणं बृहत् ॥

Transliteration

sarvendriyaguṇābhāsaṃ sarvendriyavivarjitam | sarvasya prabhum īśānaṃ sarvasya śaraṇaṃ bṛhat ||

Translation

Appearing as if possessed of the qualities of every sense organ, yet devoid of every sense organ; the lord of all, the ruler, the vast refuge of all.

Deep Meaning

Though he is without senses, he knows the objects of all the senses. He is the lord of all, the ruler of all, and the greatest refuge.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

अपाणिपादो जवनो ग्रहीता पश्यत्यचक्षुः स शृणोत्यकर्णः । स वेत्ति वेद्यं न च तस्यास्ति वेत्ता तमाहुरग्र्यं पुरुषं महान्तम् ॥

Transliteration

apāṇipādo javano grahītā paśyaty acakṣuḥ sa śṛṇoty akarṇaḥ | sa vetti vedyaṃ na ca tasyāsti vettā tam āhur agryaṃ puruṣaṃ mahāntam ||

Translation

Without hands or feet, swift, a grasper of things; sightless, he sees; without ears, he hears. He knows what is to be known, yet there is no knower of him; him they call the foremost, the great Purusha.

Deep Meaning

Though he has no hands or feet, he grasps all things and moves swiftly everywhere. Without eyes he sees everything, and without ears he hears everything. He knows all things that can be known, yet there is no one who knows him, and the wise call him the first and greatest Purusha.

Verse 11

Sanskrit

अणोरणीयान् महतो महीयान् नात्मा गुहायां निहितोऽस्य जन्तोः । तमक्रतुं पश्यति वीतशोको धातुः प्रसादान्महिमानमीशम् ॥

Transliteration

aṇor aṇīyān mahato mahīyān nātmā guhāyāṃ nihito 'sya jantoḥ | tam akratuṃ paśyati vītaśoko dhātuḥ prasādān mahimānam īśam ||

Translation

Smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest, the Self lies hidden in the cave of this creature's heart. Free of sorrow, by the Ordainer's grace, one sees that desireless greatness, that Lord.

Deep Meaning

He is subtler than the subtle and greater than the great, hidden in the cave of the heart of this living being. By the grace of the Lord who creates all, a person who sees that Lord free from desire and his greatness becomes free from all sorrows.

Verse 12

Sanskrit

मायां तु प्रकृतिं विद्यान्मायिनं तु महेश्वरम् । तस्यावयवभूतैस्तु व्याप्तं सर्वमिदं जगत् ॥

Transliteration

māyāṃ tu prakṛtiṃ vidyān māyinaṃ tu maheśvaram | tasyāvayavabhūtais tu vyāptaṃ sarvam idaṃ jagat ||

Translation

Know Maya to be Prakriti (primal nature), and the wielder of that Maya to be Maheshvara; by the parts that are his own, this entire universe is pervaded.

Deep Meaning

Maya must be understood as Prakriti, and the great Lord must be understood as the lord of Maya. This whole world is pervaded by the aggregate of cause and effect, which are his own parts.

Verse 13

Sanskrit

यो योनिं योनिमधितिष्ठत्येको यस्मिन्निदं सं च वि चैति सर्वम् । तमीशानं वरदं देवमीड्यं निचाय्येमां शान्तिमत्यन्तमेति ॥

Transliteration

yo yoniṃ yonim adhitiṣṭhaty eko yasminn idaṃ saṃ ca vi caiti sarvam | tam īśānaṃ varadaṃ devam īḍyaṃ nicāyyemāṃ śāntim atyantam eti ||

Translation

He who alone presides over every womb of birth, in whom this entire universe comes together and disperses - having realized him, the ruling, boon-giving, praiseworthy God, one attains this everlasting peace.

Deep Meaning

He alone is the ruler of every womb. In him this whole world is dissolved at the time of dissolution and appears in manifold forms at the time of creation. A person who truly knows that supreme, worshipful, boon-giving Lord who controls all, attains that supreme peace that lasts forever, which is liberation.

Verse 14

Sanskrit

यो देवानां प्रभवश्चोद्भवश्च विश्वाधिपो रुद्रो महर्षिः । हिरण्यगर्भं पश्यत जायमानं स नो बुद्ध्या शुभया संयुनक्तु ॥

Transliteration

yo devānāṃ prabhavaś codbhavaś ca viśvādhipo rudro maharṣiḥ | hiraṇyagarbhaṃ paśyata jāyamānaṃ sa no buddhyā śubhayā saṃyunaktu ||

Translation

He who is the origin and the arising of the gods, the lord of the universe, Rudra, the great seer, who beheld Hiranyagarbha being born - may he unite us with an auspicious understanding.

Deep Meaning

Rudra, who gives rise to the gods such as Indra and makes them grow, who is the lord of all and the greatest knower, who first saw Hiranyagarbha come into being, may that supreme Lord join us with auspicious understanding.

Verse 15

सूक्ष्मातिसूक्ष्मं कलिलस्य मध्ये विश्वस्य स्रष्टारमनेकरूपम् । विश्वस्यैकं परिवेष्टितारं ज्ञात्वा शिवं शान्तिमत्यन्तमेति ॥

Transliteration

sūkṣmātisūkṣmaṃ kalilasya madhye viśvasya sraṣṭāram anekarūpam | viśvasyaikaṃ pariveṣṭitāraṃ jñātvā śivaṃ śāntim atyantam eti ||

Translation

Subtler than the subtlest, in the midst of the primal confusion, the creator of the universe in many forms - knowing him, the one enveloper of the universe, as Shiva, one attains everlasting peace.

Deep Meaning

Knowing the one Lord of auspicious nature, who is subtler than the subtle, hidden within the secret place of the heart-cave, who creates the whole universe, who takes many forms, and who encompasses the whole world on all sides, a person attains lasting peace.

Verse 16

Sanskrit

घृतात् परं मण्डमिवातिसूक्ष्मं ज्ञात्वा शिवं सर्वभूतेषु गूढम् । विश्वस्यैकं परिवेष्टितारं ज्ञात्वा देवं मुच्यते सर्वपाशैः ॥

Transliteration

ghṛtāt paraṃ maṇḍam ivātisūkṣmaṃ jñātvā śivaṃ sarvabhūteṣu gūḍham | viśvasyaikaṃ pariveṣṭitāraṃ jñātvā devaṃ mucyate sarvapāśaiḥ ||

Translation

Beyond ghee, exceedingly subtle like its cream - knowing Shiva thus, hidden in all beings, the one enveloper of the universe - knowing that God, one is freed from every bond.

Deep Meaning

Knowing the one supreme Lord of auspicious nature, as subtle as the essence that lies on top of butter, and as one who encompasses the whole world on all sides, a person is freed from all bonds.

Verse 17

Sanskrit

यदातमस्तन्न दिवा न रात्रिर्न सन्न चासच्छिव एव केवलः । तदक्षरं तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं प्रज्ञा च तस्मात् प्रसृता पुराणी ॥

Transliteration

yadā tamas tan na divā na rātrir na san na cāsac chiva eva kevalaḥ | tad akṣaraṃ tat savitur vareṇyaṃ prajñā ca tasmāt prasṛtā purāṇī ||

Translation

When that darkness is gone, it is then neither day nor night, neither being nor non-being - Shiva alone, in his aloneness. That is the imperishable, that is to be chosen above even the sun; and from that, this ancient wisdom has spread forth.

Deep Meaning

When the complete darkness of ignorance is gone, that reality which is experienced is neither day nor night, neither being nor non-being. Shiva alone is pure and auspicious. He is imperishable, he is the object of worship even for the deity of the sun, and the ancient knowledge spreads from him.

Verse 18

Sanskrit

भावग्राह्यमनीडाख्यं भावाभावकरं शिवम् । कलासर्गकरं देवं ये विदुस्ते जहुस्तनुम् ॥

Transliteration

bhāvagrāhyam anīḍākhyaṃ bhāvābhāvakaraṃ śivam | kalāsargakaraṃ devaṃ ye vidus te jahus tanum ||

Translation

Graspable only through inward feeling, said to have no resting-place, the maker of both becoming and ceasing-to-be, auspicious - those who come to know that God, the maker of the kalas, abandon the body.

Deep Meaning

The supreme Lord, who is to be attained through the feeling of faith and devotion, who is called without support, who creates and dissolves the world, who is auspicious and who makes the sixteen arts: sadhakas who know him give up the body for good and are freed from the cycle of birth and death.
