Verse 1

Sanskrit

प्रातः स्मरामि भवभीतिहरं सुरेशं गङ्गाधरं वृषभवाहनमम्बिकेशम् । खट्वाङ्गशूलवरदाभयहस्तमीशं संसाररोगहरमौषधमद्वितीयम् ॥ १ ॥

Transliteration

prātaḥ smarāmi bhavabhītiharaṃ sureśaṃ gaṅgādharaṃ vṛṣabhavāhanam ambikeśam | khaṭvāṅgaśūlavaradābhayahastam īśaṃ saṃsārarogaharam auṣadham advitīyam || 1 ||

Translation

At dawn I remember Isha, the remover of the fear of worldly existence, the lord of the gods, the bearer of the Ganga, whose vehicle is the bull, the lord of Ambika, holding in his hands the skull-staff, the trident, and the gestures of boon-giving and fearlessness - the unique, unparalleled medicine that removes the disease of worldly existence.

Deep Meaning

I remember at dawn the lord of the gods who removes the fear of worldly existence, who holds the Ganga, whose vehicle is the bull, the lord of Ambika, who holds the khatvanga, trident, and the gestures of boon and fearlessness. He is the one incomparable medicine that removes the disease of worldly existence, the Ishana, Mahadeva.

Verse 2

प्रातर्नमामि गिरिशं गिरिजार्द्धदेहं विश्वेश्वरं विजितविश्वमनोऽभिरामं । सर्गस्थितिप्रलयकारणमादिदेवं संसाररोगहरमौषधमद्वितीयम् ॥ २ ॥

Transliteration

prātar namāmi giriśaṃ girijārddhadehaṃ viśveśvaraṃ vijitaviśvamano 'bhirāmaṃ | sargasthitipralayakāraṇam ādidevaṃ saṃsārarogaharam auṣadham advitīyam || 2 ||

Translation

At dawn I bow to Girisha, whose body is half that of the mountain's daughter, the lord of the universe, who having conquered the universe is charming to the mind - the cause of creation, maintenance and dissolution, the primal god, the unique, unparalleled medicine that removes the disease of worldly existence.

Deep Meaning

I salute at dawn the Girisha (Shiva), whose half-body is Parvati, the cause of the creation, sustenance and dissolution of the world, the primal god, the lord of the universe, the conqueror of the world whose beauty delights the mind, the one incomparable medicine that destroys the disease of worldly existence.

प्रातर्भजामि शिवमेकमनन्तमाद्यं वेदान्तवेद्यमनघं पुरुषं महान्तम् । नामादिभेदरहितं च विकारशून्यं संसाररोगहरमौषधमद्वितीयम् ॥ ३ ॥

Transliteration

prātar bhajāmi śivam ekam anantam ādyaṃ vedāntavedyam anaghaṃ puruṣaṃ mahāntam | nāmādibhedarahitaṃ ca vikāraśūnyaṃ saṃsārarogaharam auṣadham advitīyam || 3 ||

Translation

At dawn I worship the one Shiva, endless, primal, knowable through Vedanta, sinless, the great Purusha, free of distinctions beginning with name, and empty of all modification - the unique, unparalleled medicine that removes the disease of worldly existence.

Deep Meaning

I worship at dawn that one Shiva, who is without end and the first, known through Vedanta, sinless, the great Purusha, free from differences of name and the like, and free from the six modifications (birth, growth, stability, transformation, decline and destruction), the one incomparable medicine that removes the disease of worldly existence.

Verse 4

प्रातः समुत्थाय शिवं विचिन्त्य श्लोकत्रयं येऽनुदिनं पठन्ति । ते दुःखजातं बहुजन्मसञ्चितं हित्वा पदं यान्ति तदेव शम्भोः ॥ ४ ॥

Transliteration

prātaḥ samutthāya śivaṃ vicintya ślokatrayaṃ ye 'nudinaṃ paṭhanti | te duḥkhajātaṃ bahujanmasañcitaṃ hitvā padaṃ yānti tad eva śambhoḥ || 4 ||

Translation

Those who, rising at dawn and meditating on Shiva, recite these three verses every day - abandoning the mass of sorrow accumulated across many births, they go to that very state of Shambhu.
