Verse 1

Sanskrit

नमः शम्भवाय च मयोभवाय च नमः शङ्कराय च मयस्कराय च नमः शिवाय च शिवतराय च ॥

Transliteration

namaḥ śambhavāya ca mayobhavāya ca namaḥ śaṅkarāya ca mayaskarāya ca namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca ||

Translation

Salutation to Shambhu, and salutation to him who brings happiness; salutation to Shankara, and to him who creates happiness; salutation to Shiva, and to him who is more auspicious still.

Deep Meaning

Salutations to Lord Shiva, the root source of welfare and happiness. Salutations to Lord Shiva, who expands welfare and expands happiness. Salutations to Lord Shiva, the embodiment of auspiciousness and its ultimate limit.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

ईशानः सर्वविद्यानामीश्वरः सर्वभूतानां ब्रह्माधिपतिर्ब्रह्मणोऽधिपतिर्ब्रह्मा शिवो मे अस्तु सदाशिवोम् ॥

Transliteration

īśānaḥ sarvavidyānām īśvaraḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ brahmādhipatir brahmaṇo 'dhipatir brahmā śivo me astu sadāśivom ||

Translation

The Ishana, lord of all forms of knowledge, the ruler of all beings, the overlord of the Brahma-Veda, the overlord of Brahma himself, who is Brahma - let that Shiva be, for me, the everlasting Sadashiva.

Deep Meaning

May Shiva, the lord of all knowledge, the ruler of all beings, the overlord of the Brahma-Veda, the sustainer of the strength and vigour of Brahma, and Brahma himself, the supreme Self of the nature of existence, consciousness and bliss, remain for me the eternal embodiment of welfare.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महादेवाय धीमहि । तन्नो रुद्रः प्रचोदयात् ॥

Transliteration

tatpuruṣāya vidmahe mahādevāya dhīmahi | tanno rudraḥ pracodayāt ||

Translation

May we know that Supreme Person; may we meditate upon the Great God; may that Rudra impel us onward.

Deep Meaning

We come to know that inner indwelling Purusha, who is the supreme Lord (the meaning of tat). We meditate on that Mahadeva. May Lord Rudra continually inspire us toward righteous conduct.

Verse 4

Sanskrit

अघोरेभ्योऽथ घोरेभ्यो घोरघोरतरेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः सर्वशर्वेभ्यो नमस्तेऽस्तु रुद्ररूपेभ्यः ॥

Transliteration

aghorebhyo 'tha ghorebhyo ghoraghoratarebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ sarvaśarvebhyo namaste 'stu rudrarūpebhyaḥ ||

Translation

To the not-terrible forms, and to the terrible, to those more terrible than the terrible, to all of them, to all the Sharva forms: may salutation be to your Rudra forms.

Deep Meaning

To you who are Aghora (not terrible), Ghora (terrible), more terrible than the terrible, and who are the all-destroying form of Rudra: my salutations to all those forms of yours.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

वामदेवाय नमो ज्येष्ठाय नमः श्रेष्ठाय नमो रुद्राय नमः कालाय नमः कलविकरणाय नमो बलविकरणाय नमो बलाय नमो बलप्रमथनाय नमः सर्वभूतदमनाय नमो मनोन्मनाय नमः ॥

Transliteration

vāmadevāya namo jyeṣṭhāya namaḥ śreṣṭhāya namo rudrāya namaḥ kālāya namaḥ kalavikaraṇāya namo balavikaraṇāya namo balāya namo balapramathanāya namaḥ sarvabhūtadamanāya namo manonmanāya namaḥ ||

Translation

Salutation to Vamadeva, salutation to Jyeshtha, salutation to Shreshtha, salutation to Rudra, salutation to Kala, salutation to Kalavikarana, salutation to Balavikarana, salutation to Bala, salutation to Balapramathana, salutation to Sarvabhutadamana, salutation to Manonmana.

Deep Meaning

O Lord, you alone are named Vamadeva, Jyeshtha, Shreshtha, Rudra, Kala, Kalavikarana, Balavikarana, Bala, Balapramathana, Sarvabhutadamana and Manonmana. In all these names and forms, my repeated salutations are to you.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

सद्योजातं प्रपद्यामि सद्योजाताय वै नमो नमः । भवे भवे नातिभवे भवस्व मां भवोद्भवाय नमः ॥

Transliteration

sadyojātaṃ prapadyāmi sadyojātāya vai namo namaḥ | bhave bhave nātibhave bhavasva māṃ bhavodbhavāya namaḥ ||

Translation

I take refuge in the newly-born one; salutation, salutation again, to Sadyojata. In birth after birth, let me not meet with ill fortune - Bhava, be thus to me. Salutation to Bhavodbhava.

Deep Meaning

I take refuge in Sadyojata. Salutations to Sadyojata. In no birth and in no world may he let me suffer defeat or downfall. Salutations to you, Bhavodbhava.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

नमः सायं नमः प्रातर्नमो रात्र्या नमो दिवा । भवाय च शर्वाय चोभाभ्यामकरं नमः ॥

Transliteration

namaḥ sāyaṃ namaḥ prātar namo rātryā namo divā | bhavāya ca śarvāya cobhābhyām akaraṃ namaḥ ||

Translation

Salutation in the evening, salutation in the morning, salutation by night, salutation by day. To Bhava and Sharva, to both, I make salutation.

Deep Meaning

O Rudra! Salutations to you in the evening, at dawn, at night and by day. I bow to both Bhavadeva and Rudradeva.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

यस्य निःश्वसितं वेदा यो वेदेभ्योऽखिलं जगत् । निर्ममे तमहं वन्दे विद्यातीर्थं महेश्वरम् ॥

Transliteration

yasya niḥśvasitaṃ vedā yo vedebhyo 'khilaṃ jagat | nirmame tam ahaṃ vande vidyātīrthaṃ maheśvaram ||

Translation

Whose breathing-out is the Vedas, who from the Vedas fashioned this entire universe - him I salute, Maheshvara, the sacred crossing-place of all knowledge.

Deep Meaning

I salute Shiva, whose breath is the Veda, who created the whole universe through the Vedas, and who is the sacred fount of all knowledge.

Verse 9

Sanskrit

त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

Transliteration

tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam | urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt ||

Translation

We worship the three-eyed one: like a cucumber, fragrant, may I be freed from death's bond, the increaser of nourishment, not from immortality.

Deep Meaning

We worship Shankara, the three-eyed one, fragrant, the increaser of nourishment. May that Shankara free us from sorrow as a ripe cucumber easily frees itself from its stalk, but may he not free us from liberation.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

सर्वो वै रुद्रस्तस्मै रुद्राय नमो अस्तु । पुरुषो वै रुद्रः सन्महो नमो नमः । विश्वं भूतं भुवनं चित्रं बहुधा जातं जायमानं च यत् । सर्वो ह्येष रुद्रस्तस्मै रुद्राय नमो अस्तु ॥

Transliteration

sarvo vai rudras tasmai rudrāya namo astu | puruṣo vai rudraḥ sanmaho namo namaḥ | viśvaṃ bhūtaṃ bhuvanaṃ citraṃ bahudhā jātaṃ jāyamānaṃ ca yat | sarvo hy eṣa rudras tasmai rudrāya namo astu ||

Translation

All this, indeed, is Rudra - to that Rudra let salutation be. Purusha, indeed, is Rudra, the great being - salutation, salutation again. Whatever has come to be in manifold ways, and is still coming to be, this entire varied universe, this being, this world - all this is indeed this same Rudra; to that Rudra let salutation be.

Deep Meaning

Rudra, the consort of Uma, has entered all bodies as the individual soul; our salutation is to him. The one, unique and well-known Rudra alone is the Purusha. He dwells in Brahmaloka as Brahma, in Prajapatiloka as Prajapati, in the solar sphere in the cosmic Vairata form, and in the body as the jiva. Repeated salutations to that great Rudra, who is of the nature of existence, consciousness and bliss. Whatever moves and does not move, whatever exists, has come into being or will come into being, is nothing other than Rudra. Salutation to this Rudra.
