Rudrabhisheka - Intermediate

A fuller Rudrabhisheka using the actual dravya-by-dravya (substance-by-substance) sequence given in the Rudrashtadhyayi itself - different substances for different specific intentions, not a generic panchamrita list from outside the book.

Select Practice Level

📋Pre-Puja Requirements

⏰ Best Timing:

  • •Monday, Pradosha (13th lunar day evening), or any day during Shravan month are especially favoured
  • •Morning or the Pradosha evening window are both traditionally excellent

🚿 Personal Preparation:

  • •Bathe and wear clean clothes
  • •Prepare all substances in advance so the sequence is not interrupted
  • •Choose one or two specific intentions from the dravya list below rather than attempting all of them in one sitting

🧘 Recommended Preparation:

Asana: Sukhasana or Vajrasana on a clean mat

Pranayama: A few minutes of slow, calm breathing before beginning

Duration: 3-5 minutes

Achaman and Pavitrikaran

⏱️ 3 minutes

ॐ

Sip water for achaman, then sprinkle water on yourself and your materials for purification, exactly as this book's own puja-vidhi opens.

Mantra:

Oṃ apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṃ gato 'pi vā | Yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ sa bāhyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥ ||

Meaning: Whether pure or impure, in whatever state one may be, whoever remembers the lotus-eyed one becomes pure inside and out.

2

Sankalp (full form)

⏱️ 5 minutes

State your name, gotra, and specific intention using the book's own sankalp template - either the desire-bound (sakaam) or desireless (nishkaam) form. Fill in your own name and gotra; use "Vishnuprajapatikshetre" if you do not know your specific region's Puranic name.

Mantra:

Oṃ Viṣṇur Viṣṇur Viṣṇuḥ namaḥ paramātmane puruṣottamāya...(fill in gotra, place, date)...śrīsāmbasadāśivapūjanapūrvakaṃ jaladhārayā Rudrābhiṣekaṃ kariṣye | Tadaṅgatvena kāryasya nirvighnatayā siddhyarthaṃ ādau Gaṇeśāmbikayoḥ pūjanaṃ kariṣye |

Meaning: I declare my intention to worship Sri Sambasadashiva with a stream of water for Rudrabhisheka. As a preliminary to this, to ensure the work proceeds without obstacle, I shall first worship Ganesha and Ambika.

⚠️Important Warning:

This is the book's full sankalp template with blanks - it is normal for the exact gotra/place/date portion to feel unfamiliar at first; substituting general terms (as noted) is explicitly allowed by the book itself for those who do not know the specifics.

💡 Tips:

  • •The book gives this sankalp in two complete variants (sakaam, with a specific desire, and nishkaam, desireless) - pick whichever fits your intention honestly rather than defaulting to one
3

Ganesh-Ambika puja

⏱️ 5 minutes

Invoke and briefly honour Ganesha and Gauri (Ambika) before the main abhisheka, exactly as this book requires - offering akshata while reciting the invocation.

Mantra:

Oṃ gaṇānāṃ tvā gaṇapatiṃ havāmahe priyāṇāṃ tvā priyapatiṃ havāmahe nidhīnāṃ tvā nidhipatiṃ havāmahe vaso mama | Oṃ ambe ambike 'mbālike na mā nayati kaścana |

Meaning: We invoke you, lord of the Ganas; we invoke you, lord of all that is dear; we invoke you, lord of treasures. Abide with us, O Vasu. O Ambe, Ambike, Ambalike, let none lead me astray.

💡 Tips:

  • •If you have no Ganesha-Gauri murti, the book's own instruction is to draw an eight-petalled lotus with kumkum on akshata and use a betel nut wrapped in thread as a stand-in
4

Dravya abhisheka by intention

⏱️ 15-20 minutes

Choose one or two substances matching your actual intention from the book's own list, and pour each while naming that substance in the sankalp ("jaladharaya" for water, "dugdhadharaya" for milk, and so on, exactly as the book instructs). Recite Namah Shambhavaya and Namaste Rudra (from the beginner level) while pouring each substance.

Mantra:

Jalena vṛṣṭim āpnoti vyādhiśāntyai kuśodakaiḥ || Dadhnā ca paśukāmāya śriyā ikṣurasena ca | Madhvājyena dhanārthī syān mumukṣus tīrthavāriṇā || Putrārthī putram āpnoti payasā cābhiṣecanāt |

Meaning: By water, one obtains rain; by kusha-water, peace from disease. By curd, for the desire of cattle/prosperity; by sugarcane juice, for wealth [Lakshmi]. By honey and ghee, one desiring wealth [attains it]; one desiring liberation, by water from a sacred tirtha. One desiring a child obtains a child through abhisheka with milk.

💡 Tips:

  • •This is the book's actual dravya-to-intention list, not a generic substitute - water for rain/general peace, milk for progeny and long life, curd for prosperity of livestock, honey and ghee together for wealth, sugarcane juice for the Lakshmi/wealth intention
  • •The book adds two further substances in its fuller prose explanation of this same list (not in the compact verse quoted above): sugar-sweetened milk for sharpening a dull intellect, and mustard oil, used alone, for destroying enemies or obstacles
  • •Pour each substance slowly, naming your intention silently as you do
5

Bilva offering and closing

⏱️ 5 minutes

Offer bilva leaves and close with the apology verse, exactly as in the beginner form.

Mantra:

Tridalaṃ triguṇākāraṃ trinetraṃ ca triyāyudham | Trijanmapāpasaṃhāraṃ ekabilvaṃ śivārpaṇam || ...Yad akṣarapadabhraṣṭaṃ mātrāhīnaṃ ca yad bhavet | Tat sarvaṃ kṣamyatāṃ deva prasīda parameśvara || Anena kṛtena śrī rudrābhiṣekakarmaṇā śrī bhavānīśaṅkaramahārudraḥ prīyatām, na mama | Oṃ śrīsāmbasadāśivārpaṇam astu ||

Meaning: This single bilva leaf, three-leaved, three-eyed, three-weaponed, destroying three births' sin, is offered to Shiv. ...Whatever has been dropped or deficient in this recitation, may it be forgiven, O gracious Supreme Lord. By this act of Rudrabhisheka performed, may Bhavani-Shankara, the Great Rudra, be pleased - not for my sake alone.

🌟Benefits of This Vidhi

✓Uses the book's own substance-to-intention mapping, sourced directly from its text rather than general knowledge
✓Introduces the Ganesh-Ambika puja that this book places before any Shiv abhisheka proper
✓A natural second step once the beginner mantras (especially Namaste Rudra) are comfortable

⚠️Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • •Attempting every dravya in the list in one sitting rather than choosing one or two genuine intentions
  • •Skipping the Ganesh-Ambika puja - the book treats this as a required preliminary, not an optional add-on
  • •Not naming the actual substance in the sankalp when pouring it (e.g. saying "jaladharaya" while actually pouring milk)
  • •Using store-bought flavoured or processed substances where the book specifies a plain, natural one

💡Additional Notes

  • •This intermediate level introduces real substance choice - read the dravya list carefully and choose what matches your actual, honest intention rather than defaulting to whatever is easiest to obtain
  • •The full advanced level adds the complete 16-step (shodashopachara) worship and the formal Ekadashini recitation structure
