Rudrabhisheka - Advanced

The complete Rudrabhisheka as the Rudrashtadhyayi itself lays it out: full sankalp, Ganesh-Ambika puja, the complete sixteen-step (shodashopachara) worship, the Shatarudriya and Chamakam recitation in the Ekadashini structure, and the full post-abhisheka conclusion (uttarapujan, aarti, visarjan) that closes the book's own ritual-procedure section.

Select Practice Level

📋Pre-Puja Requirements

⏰ Best Timing:

  • •Shravan month, Mahashivratri, or any Monday/Pradosha are traditionally the most auspicious windows for the full form
  • •Best begun in the morning, since the complete sequence with a single Ekadashini recitation takes well over an hour

🚿 Personal Preparation:

  • •This level assumes comfort with the beginner and intermediate mantras already
  • •Arrange all materials and read through the full sequence once before beginning, so the recitation is not interrupted
  • •Consider having the Rudrashtadhyayi adhyaya pages (linked below) open for reference during recitation

🧘 Recommended Preparation:

Asana: A dedicated, clean asana for the full duration

Pranayama: Several minutes of calming pranayama before beginning - this is a long sequence and a settled mind matters

Duration: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Do not rush a long recitation out of a sense of obligation - a shorter, calmer practice is better than a long, hurried one

1

Full preparation through Ganesh-Ambika puja

⏱️ 20-25 minutes

Complete achaman, pranayama, raksha-deep-prajwalan, the full sankalp, and the Ganesh-Ambika puja exactly as in the intermediate level, but without abbreviating any portion.

Mantra:

Oṃ siddhibuddhisahitāya śrīman mahāgaṇādhipataye namaḥ |

Meaning: Salutation to the great lord of the Ganas, together with Siddhi and Buddhi.

💡 Tips:

  • •At this level, perform the full Ganesh-Ambika shodashopachara (all sixteen offerings) rather than the shortened version
2

Shadanga-nyasa

⏱️ 5 minutes

Perform the six-limb touch-sequence that marks the start of the abhisheka proper, touching heart, head, tuft, shoulders, eyes and clapping the palm with the six corresponding bija-mantras.

Mantra:

Oṃ hṛdayāya namaḥ | Oṃ śirase svāhā | Oṃ śikhāyai vaṣaṭ | Oṃ kavacāya hum | Oṃ netratrayāya vauṣaṭ | Oṃ astrāya phaṭ ||

Meaning: Salutation to the heart. Svaha to the head. Vashat to the tuft. Hum to the armour. Vaushat to the three eyes. Phat to the weapon.

3

Shatarudriya and Chamakam recitation (Ekadashini structure)

⏱️ 45-60 minutes for one full round of both adhyayas; proportionally longer for a full Ekadashini

Recite Adhyaya 5 (Shatarudriya/Namakam) and Adhyaya 8 (Chamakadhyaya) together, pouring your chosen abhisheka substance throughout. For a full Ekadashini, this combined recitation is repeated eleven times, in the book's own prescribed interleaving pattern; for a single round, recite each adhyaya once in full.

Mantra:

Hariḥ oṃ namas te Rudra manyava uto ta iṣave namaḥ | Bāhubhyām uta te namaḥ || ...Hariḥ oṃ vājaś ca me prasavaś ca me...yajñena kalpantām ||

Meaning: The opening of the Shatarudriya (salutation to Rudra's wrath, arrow and arms) and the opening of the Chamakadhyaya (food/strength and every other blessing, fulfilled by this sacrifice) - the two texts this entire abhisheka is built around.

⚠️Important Warning:

Do not attempt the full eleven-fold Ekadashini until you are genuinely comfortable reciting both adhyayas once through calmly

💡 Tips:

  • •Read both full adhyayas directly rather than reciting from memory unless you are genuinely confident in them
  • •A single full recitation of Namakam+Chamakam together is traditionally called one Ekadashini-equivalent round; eleven such rounds make a complete Ekadashini proper
4

Full Uttarapujan (16-step worship)

⏱️ 25-30 minutes

After the abhisheka, perform the complete sixteen-step worship: padya, arghya, achaman, snana, vastra, yajnopavita, chandanaanulepan, akshata, pushpa, dhoop, deep, naivedya, tambula, dravya-dakshina, pradakshina and pranam, exactly as the book sequences them.

Mantra:

Namaḥ śambhavāya ca mayobhavāya ca | Namaḥ śaṅkarāya ca mayaskarāya ca | Namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca ||

Meaning: The snana (bathing) mantra of the Uttarapujan - the same Namah Shambhavaya verse used at the very start of the beginner form, now marking the ritual bath after the main abhisheka.

💡 Tips:

  • •Each of the sixteen steps has its own short dedication line in the book ("...samarpayami") - offer each item while naming it, rather than silently
5

Aarti and mantra-pushpanjali

⏱️ 10 minutes

Perform aarti using either of the two alternative aartis the book gives - the well-known "Jai Shiv Omkara" or the "Bhagwan Gangadhar ki Aarti" - then offer flowers with the mantra-pushpanjali verse.

Mantra:

Mā nas toke tanaye mā na āyuṣi mā no goṣu mā no aśveṣu rīriṣaḥ | Mā no vīrān Rudra bhāmino vadhīr haviṣmantaḥ sadam it tvā havāmahe ||

Meaning: Do not harm our children or grandchildren, our lifespan, our cattle, or our horses. Do not slay our heroes, O wrathful Rudra; bearing oblations, we call upon you always.

💡 Tips:

  • •The book explicitly says either aarti may be used - there is no requirement to do both
6

Visarjan (closing)

⏱️ 5-10 minutes

Close with the dakshina-sankalp, the final protective mantras, and the formal visarjan (sending-off) of the invoked presence, ending the rite exactly as the book itself ends it.

Mantra:

Yāntu devagaṇāḥ sarve pūjām ādāya māmakīm | Iṣṭakāmasamṛddhyarthaṃ punarāgamanāya ca || Gaccha gaccha suraśreṣṭha svasthāne parameśvara | Yatra brahmādayo devās tatra gaccha hutāśana || ...Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ | Suśāntir bhavatu | Yad akṣarapadabhraṣṭaṃ mātrāhīnaṃ ca yad bhavet | Tat sarvaṃ kṣamyatāṃ deva prasīda parameśvara || Anena kṛtena śrī rudrābhiṣekakarmaṇā śrī bhavānīśaṅkaramahārudraḥ prīyatām, na mama | Oṃ śrīsāmbasadāśivārpaṇam astu ||

Meaning: May all the hosts of gods depart, having accepted my worship, for the fulfilment of my desires and for their return again. Go, go, best of gods, to your own place, Supreme Lord; where Brahma and the other gods are, go there, O fire. ...Peace, peace, peace. May there be good peace. Whatever has been dropped or deficient, may it be forgiven, O gracious Supreme Lord. By this act of Rudrabhisheka performed, may Bhavani-Shankara, the Great Rudra, be pleased - not for my sake alone.

💡 Tips:

  • •This closing sequence, including the apology verse, is the book's own ending - recite it rather than skipping straight to prasad distribution

🌟Benefits of This Vidhi

✓The complete procedure this entire book was written to document, not a reconstruction from general knowledge
✓Follows the book's own escalating structure (Ekadashini -> Laghu Rudra -> Maha Rudra -> Ati Rudra) for those building toward longer recitation
✓Includes the full visarjan (closing) sequence, rarely documented elsewhere

⚠️Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • •Attempting a full Ekadashini (eleven rounds) before being comfortable with even a single round of Namakam+Chamakam
  • •Skipping the Uttarapujan because the main abhisheka "feels like" the complete rite - the book treats the post-abhisheka worship as equally mandatory
  • •Omitting the visarjan and apology verse, leaving the rite technically unclosed
  • •Performing this full form without having built up through the beginner and intermediate levels first

💡Additional Notes

  • •The book documents a formal escalation beyond even this: Laghu Rudra (11x this full Ekadashini), Maha Rudra (11x Laghu Rudra), and Ati Rudra (11x Maha Rudra) - these are major undertakings traditionally done with multiple Brahmins over several days, not solo daily practice
  • •If time is genuinely short on a given day, the book itself provides an abbreviated Uttarapujan formula (see step 4) rather than skipping it entirely
