Daily Household Shiv Puja

A practical daily or weekly worship routine for an ordinary household altar, using the Rudrashtadhyayi's own abbreviated-form footnote for those short on time, alongside the fuller sixteen-step sequence for days with more time available.

Abbreviated form (for busy days)

⏱️ 5 minutes

पूजा

On days when time is short, use the book's own shortcut: a single dedication line covering all the usual offerings together, followed by Namah Shambhavaya.

Mantra:

Oṃ sāmbasadāśivāya namaḥ, uttarapūjanārthe sarvopacārārthe gandhākṣatapuṣpabilvapatrāṇi samarpayāmi | Namaḥ śambhavāya ca mayobhavāya ca | Namaḥ śaṅkarāya ca mayaskarāya ca | Namaḥ śivāya ca śivatarāya ca ||

Meaning: Salutation to Sri Sambasadashiva; for the sake of the Uttarapujan, for the sake of all offerings together, I offer sandalwood paste, rice, flowers and bilva leaves. Salutation to Shambhu and to him who brings happiness; to Shankara and to him who creates happiness; to Shiv and to him who is more auspicious still.

💡 Tips:

  • •This is word for word the Rudrashtadhyayi's own stated shortcut for an abbreviated Uttarapujan, down to "uttarapujanarthe" - not an improvised simplification. The Namah Shambhavaya line that follows is not part of this footnote itself; it is added here from the book's own snana (bathing) verse used earlier in the same Uttarapujan sequence, as a natural, genuinely-sourced accompaniment
2

Full form - purification and sankalp

⏱️ 3 minutes

ॐ

On days with more time, begin properly: achaman, then a simple sankalp naming your intention.

Mantra:

ॐ अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा। यः स्मरेत् पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः॥

Oṃ apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṃ gato 'pi vā | Yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ sa bāhyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥ ||

Meaning: Whether pure or impure, in whatever state one may be, whoever remembers the lotus-eyed one becomes pure inside and out.

3

Full form - offerings

⏱️ 10 minutes

पूजा

Offer water (achaman/padya/arghya together), chandan, akshata, flowers, bilva, dhoop and deep in sequence, each with the dedication formula.

Mantra:

Bhagavate śrīsāmbasadāśivāya namaḥ, gandhānulepanaṃ samarpayāmi | Bhagavate śrīsāmbasadāśivāya namaḥ, puṣpapuṣpamālāṃ samarpayāmi | Bhagavate śrīsāmbasadāśivāya namaḥ, dhūpam āghrāpayāmi | Bhagavate śrīsāmbasadāśivāya namaḥ, dīpaṃ darśayāmi |

Meaning: Salutation to the glorious Lord Sri Sambasadashiva; I offer sandal-paste anointing. ...I offer flowers and a flower garland. ...I present incense. ...I show the lamp.

💡 Tips:

  • •Each offering gets its own short dedication line in the book - naming what you offer as you offer it, rather than silently. The book's own dedication formula is "bhagavate shri-sambasadashivaya namah", not the shorter "om sambasadashivaya namah" used in the abbreviated footnote - the two are genuinely different wordings for different occasions in the same text
4

Naivedya and closing

⏱️ 2 minutes

ॐभोग / नैवेद्यम्

Offer any simple food (fruit, sweet, or even just water) as naivedya, then close with the apology verse.

Mantra:

यदक्षरपदभ्रष्टं मात्राहीनञ्च यद्भवेत्। तत्सर्वं क्षम्यतां देव प्रसीद परमेश्वर॥ ॐ श्रीसाम्बसदाशिवार्पणमस्तु।

Yad akṣarapadabhraṣṭaṃ mātrāhīnaṃ ca yad bhavet | Tat sarvaṃ kṣamyatāṃ deva prasīda parameśvara || Oṃ śrīsāmbasadāśivārpaṇam astu |

Meaning: Whatever has been dropped or deficient, may it be forgiven, O gracious Supreme Lord. Om, may this be offered to Sri Sambasadashiva.

🌟Benefits of This Vidhi

✓A sustainable, repeatable daily practice rather than an occasional elaborate one
✓Uses the book's own explicit shortcut for busy days, not an invented simplification
✓Suitable for a home altar without requiring a Shivalinga specifically - a picture or image is sufficient

⚠️Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • •Treating the abbreviated form as "not real" worship - the book itself provides it explicitly for exactly this use
  • •Attempting the full form every single day and burning out, rather than using the abbreviated form on busy days and reserving the full form for when time allows
  • •Using stale or wilted flowers/leaves out of habit rather than fresh ones
  • •Forgetting the closing apology verse, leaving the practice feeling unfinished

💡Additional Notes

  • •This vidhi is deliberately the simplest of the three on this site - it is meant to be sustainable daily practice, not a condensed version of the full Rudrabhisheka
  • •Moving between the abbreviated and full forms as time allows, rather than picking one permanently, mirrors how the book itself presents them as a pair
