Nandi
नन्दी
Shiv's bull and chief attendant
Nandi is Shiv's bull and the leader of his ganas. The Shata Rudra Samhita tells his avatara, and a Nandi stotra is among the stotras on this site.
Where the Purana tells it
The Shata Rudra Samhita's Nandikeshvara chapters tell how Shilada won a son through austerity and how the boy answered a prophecy of early death. Nandi also appears throughout the Vayaviya Samhita, including as the one who severs the Naimisha sages' bonds at the end of the Purana.
