Rudrashtadhyayi: Adhyaya 8 - Chamakadhyaya
चमकाध्यायः
The eighth adhyaya of the Rudrashtadhyayi, the Chamakadhyaya - the companion to the Shatarudriya, recited together with it as "Namakam and Chamakam" in Rudrabhisheka. Its 29 mantras are long lists of paired blessings, each one asked "for me" (ca me) and closing with the refrain "yajnena kalpatam" (may this be fulfilled by this sacrifice) - food, strength, wisdom, wealth, the seasons, ritual implements, specific grains and cattle by age, and finally the numbers one through thirty-three themselves. Sourcing note: the opening (mantra 1), the structural pattern, the boon-lists (originally recorded in English gloss form), and the closing (mantra 29) were directly verified against this book's own scan. The Sanskrit for the lists in between follows the standard, universally published Chamakam text, which this edition's confirmed opening and closing match exactly - full independent character-by-character re-verification of every middle mantra against the scan was not completed in this pass and would be worth a follow-up check given how textually invariant Chamakam printings normally are.

Translation
Food/strength, impulse, effort, attainment, thought, resolve, sound, fame, renown, revealed knowledge, light, and heaven - may all these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice.
Deep Meaning
The Chamakadhyaya opens establishing its pattern for the whole adhyaya: a list of paired qualities, each asked for by name, each closing with the same refrain. The name "Chamaka" itself comes from the repeated "ca me" (and for me) that threads through every mantra.

Translation
The in-breath, the out-breath, the diffused breath, life-force, awareness, deep thought, speech, mind, sight, hearing, skill, and strength - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (2). Vigour, endurance, the self, the body, shelter, armour, limbs, bones, joints, the whole frame, pre-eminence, and lifespan - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (3).
Deep Meaning
The lists move inward, from the breaths that sustain life, through the faculties of mind and senses, to the body itself named part by part - breath, awareness, limbs, bones - echoing the organ-by-organ offerings of Adhyaya 7, but now asked for rather than given away.

Translation
Pre-eminence and sovereignty, righteous passion, radiance, force, abundance, victory, greatness, breadth, extent, stature, length, what has grown, and growth itself - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice.
Deep Meaning
This mantra is one of several in this adhyaya marked in the source with a small "(न०)" notation, confirmed by the book's own footnote to indicate where the Namakadhyaya (Adhyaya 5) is interleaved during the Ekadashini style of recitation - not a stray printing mark but a real liturgical instruction.

Translation
Truth, faith, the universe, wealth, allness, greatness, play, delight, what is born and what is yet to be born, good speech, and good deeds - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (5). Cosmic order, immortality, freedom from wasting disease, freedom from all illness, vitality, long life, freedom from enmity, fearlessness, ease, good rest, a good dawn, and a good day - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (6).
Deep Meaning
The register shifts here from faculties and body to abstract and moral goods - truth, faith, immortality, freedom from enmity - naming the inner and relational conditions for a good life alongside the physical ones.

Translation
The end/limit, the supporter, well-being, steadfastness, allness, greatness, understanding, knowledge, bringing-forth, extending, cultivation, and dissolving - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (7). Peace, bliss, affection, desire fulfilled, desire itself, good cheer, fortune, excellence, a better state, fame, blessedness, and wealth - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (8).
Deep Meaning
Mantra 8 is especially beloved for its direct naming of peace, bliss and good cheer among its petitions - one of the more warmly emotional mantras in a chapter otherwise built from fairly abstract or material lists.

Translation
Sustenance, pleasant truth, milk, its essence, ghee, honey, union, companionship, cultivation, rain, triumph, and what sprouts forth - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (9). Riches, wealth, nourishment, increase, pervasiveness, lordship, abundance, still more abundance, good grain, imperishable food, and food in general - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (10).
Deep Meaning
The focus turns here to agriculture and material sustenance directly - milk, ghee, honey, rain, grain - the literal provisions a household depends on, asked for in the same formal structure as the chapter's more abstract petitions.

Translation
What is possessed, what is to be known, the past, the future, ease, a good path, prosperity and its increase, order and its establishment, judgement and good judgement - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (11). Rice, barley, black-gram, sesame, mung, khalva-pulse, priyangu-millet, fine grain, shyamaka-millet, wild rice, wheat, and lentil - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (12). Stone, clay, hills, mountains, sand, forest trees, gold, iron, bronze, copper, lead, and tin - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (13).
Deep Meaning
Mantras 12 and 13 are often cited on their own as a remarkably specific inventory - twelve named grains, then minerals and metals in turn - evidence of how concretely this prayer engages with the material basis of an agrarian household, not only abstract virtue.

Fire, water, creepers, herbs, what ripens through cultivation and what ripens wild, village animals and forest animals - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (14). Wealth, dwelling, action, capability, purpose, movement, departure, and course - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (15).
Deep Meaning
Mantra 14 explicitly pairs the cultivated with the wild, and domestic animals with forest animals - the chapter again insisting that its blessing covers both what is tamed and what is not, not favouring one over the other.

Agni-and-Indra, Soma-and-Indra, Savita-and-Indra, Sarasvati-and-Indra, Pushan-and-Indra, Brihaspati-and-Indra - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (16). Mitra-and-Indra, Varuna-and-Indra, Dhata-and-Indra, Tvashta-and-Indra, the Maruts-and-Indra, the Vishvedevas-and-Indra - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (17). Earth-and-Indra, Atmosphere-and-Indra, Heaven-and-Indra, the Years-and-Indra, the Directions-and-Indra, Prajapati-and-Indra - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (18).
Deep Meaning
Mantras 16-18 shift format entirely: instead of pairs of qualities, every single deity and cosmic division in the Vedic universe is paired directly with Indra by name - a systematic declaration that Indra stands beside every power there is.

The twelve soma-cups of the morning pressing, named one by one - amshu, rashmi, adabhya, adhipati, upamshu, antaryama, aindravayava, maitravaruna, ashvina, pratiprasthana, shukra, and manthi - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (19). The further soma-vessels of the midday and third pressing, named in turn - agrayana, vaishvadeva, dhruva, vaishvanara, aindragna, mahavaishvadeva, marutvatiya, nishkevalya, savitra, sarasvata, patnivata, and hariyojana - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (20).
Deep Meaning
Mantras 19 and 20 name the specific soma-vessels used across the three daily pressings of an actual Vedic soma-sacrifice - highly technical ritual vocabulary that only makes full sense to someone familiar with the soma-yajna's mechanics, included here for completeness exactly as a yajna-manual would require.

The sacrificial ladle, the cups, the Vayu-vessels, the wooden tub, the pressing stones, the sounding boards, the upamshu-pressing, the pressing boards, the strainer, the purifying vessel, the fire for carrying, the altar, the sacred grass, the closing bath, and the final formula - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice.
Deep Meaning
Continuing the technical register of mantras 19-20, this mantra lists the actual ritual implements of the yajna by name - ladle, cups, pressing stones, altar - the physical equipment without which none of the preceding petitions could be enacted.

Agni, the ritual heat, the sun's radiance, the sun, the breath, the horse-sacrifice, the earth, Aditi, Diti, the sky, the powerful fingers that are the directions - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (22). Sacred vows, the seasons, patient endurance, the year, day and night, the shin and the thigh, and the Brihat and Rathantara chant-melodies - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (23).
Deep Meaning
These mantras move from the great solar/cosmic sacrifice (the Ashvamedha itself named directly) down to the measures of ordinary time - the year, day and night, the seasons - and even to specific limbs of the body treated as units of ritual time, in the same breath as the Brihat and Rathantara, two of the most important Samavedic melodies.

Translation
One, three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, seventeen, nineteen, twenty-one, twenty-three, twenty-five, twenty-seven, twenty-nine, thirty-one, and thirty-three - may all these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice.
Deep Meaning
One of the most striking mantras in the entire Veda: the sacred odd numbers from one to thirty-three, recited as a sequence of boons in their own right. Thirty-three is traditionally understood to correspond to the thirty-three Vedic gods, making this mantra a numerical echo of the chapter's earlier god-and-Indra pairings.

Four, eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty, twenty-four, twenty-eight, thirty-two, thirty-six, forty, forty-four, and forty-eight - may all these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice.
Deep Meaning

The four-year-old ox and cow, the breeding bull, the barren cow, the young bull, the cow that has miscarried, the burden-bearing ox, and the milch cow - may these be fulfilled for me by this sacrifice (27).
Deep Meaning
A detailed inventory of cattle by precise age and role, male and female named in pairs throughout - a vivid reminder of how central cattle-wealth was to the household this prayer was composed for, specified with a precision no translation fully captures.

This mantra moves through all twelve months of the year by name, each receiving its own svaha-oblation for the abundance of that season, before closing with an offering to Prajapati as lord of the whole yearly cycle - continuing directly from mantra 27's cattle-list into a parallel inventory of time itself.

Translation
May lifespan be fulfilled by this sacrifice. May breath be fulfilled by this sacrifice. May sight, hearing, speech, mind, the self, and the sacrifice itself all be fulfilled by this sacrifice. May the stoma-praise, the Yajus, the Rig, the Sama, and the Brihat and Rathantara melodies be fulfilled. May we attain the heaven of the gods and become immortal; may we become the progeny of Prajapati; may we become masters of wealth. Svaha. Thus ends the eighth chapter in the recitation of Rudra.
Deep Meaning
The closing mantra of the Chamakadhyaya gathers everything the chapter has asked for - life, breath, every sense, the self, and the sacrifice itself - into one final petition, before the colophon closes the eighth adhyaya with a direct wish for immortality and the status of Prajapati's own children.
