Kāla Bhairava Puja - Beginner
Simple and safe puja procedure for Kāla Bhairava, the fierce Lord of Time and guardian of Kashi. Simplified for daily practice. Covers Achamana, basic Nyasa, Dhyana, simple Upachara offerings, Kavach, Nama Japa, Aarti, and Shanti. Uses only public devotional mantras safe for all practitioners.

📋Pre-Puja Requirements
⏰ Best Timing:
- •Early morning (Brahma Muhurta: 4-6 AM) is most powerful
- •Evening (after sunset: 6-8 PM) is also suitable
- •Any time with sincere devotion
- •Fix the same time daily for continuity
- •Rahu Kaal on Sunday is also powerful for Kāla Bhairava
🚿 Personal Preparation:
- •Take a bath (snaana). Recite "Om Apavitrah Pavitro Va..." while bathing for purification
- •Wear clean clothes, preferably dark or black. Cover legs fully
- •Choose a quiet, clean space free from disturbances
- •Face South while seated (Kāla Bhairava's direction)
- •Silence mobile phone and remove distractions
- •Calm the mind with a few deep breaths before beginning
🧘 Recommended Preparation:
Asana: Sukhasana (easy pose) or Vajrasana (thunderbolt pose) on a clean mat or blanket
Pranayama: Three to five minutes of slow, deep abdominal breathing. Inhale through the nose for 4 counts, hold briefly, exhale for 6 counts.

Om Apavitrah Pavitro Vā Sarvāvasthāṁ Gato'pi Vā | Yaḥ Smaret Puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ Sa Bāhyābhyantaraḥ Śuciḥ ||
Meaning: Whether pure or impure, in whatever condition, whoever remembers the lotus-eyed Lord becomes pure inside and out.

Achamana (Purification Sips)

Take water in your right palm. Sip three small amounts while reciting three names. After each sip, touch your lips. This purifies body, speech, and mind.

ॐ केशवाय नमः। ॐ नारायणाय नमः। ॐ माधवाय नमः। ॐ गोविन्दाय नमः इति हस्तं प्रक्षाल्य।
Om Keśavāya Namaḥ | Om Nārāyaṇāya Namaḥ | Om Mādhavāya Namaḥ | Om Govindāya Namaḥ iti hastam prakṣhālya
Meaning: Salutations to Keshava (first sip). Salutations to Narayana (second sip). Salutations to Madhava (third sip). Then wash both hands saying Salutations to Govinda.

- •Sip mindfully, not mechanically
- •Use clean fresh water
- •If uncomfortable sipping, touch water to lips symbolically
Simple Anga-Nyasa (Body Placement)

Touch each body part while reciting the corresponding name of Kāla Bhairava. This invites the time-lord's fierce protection into your body. Touch gently with right hand fingertips.

ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः (हृदयम्)। ॐ भैरवाय नमः (मस्तकम्)। ॐ कालाग्निरुद्राय नमः (शिखा)। ॐ क्षेत्रपालाय नमः (कवचम्)। ॐ दण्डपाणये नमः (नेत्रयोः)।
Om Kālabhairavāya Namaḥ (hṛdayam) | Om Kālanāthāya Namaḥ (mastakam) | Om Kālāgnirudrāya Namaḥ (śikhā) | Om Kṣetrapālāya Namaḥ (kavacam) | Om Daṇḍapāṇaye Namaḥ (netrayoḥ)
Meaning: Salutations to Kala Bhairava at the heart. To the Lord of Time at the forehead. To Kalagni Rudra at the crown. To the Guardian of Sacred Grounds at the chest. To the Staff-bearer at the eyes.

This is a simplified 5-point Nyasa. Intermediate level covers the full 6-point Kara-Nyasa and Anga-Nyasa.

- •Feel the fierce protective energy of the time-lord at each body part
- •Sequence: Heart, Forehead, Crown, Chest, Both eyes
Sankalpa (Intention Setting)

Join palms (anjali mudra). State your name and intention. The formal sankalpa declares your purpose before the divine.

ॐ विष्णुर्विष्णुर्विष्णुः। ममोपात्त-समस्त-दुरितक्षयद्वारा श्री-कालभैरव-प्रीत्यर्थं यथाशक्ति कालभैरव-पूजां करिष्ये।
Om Viṣṇur Viṣṇur Viṣṇuḥ | Mamopātta-samasta-duritakṣayadvrā Śrī Kāla Bhairava prītyarthaṁ yathāśakti Kālabhairava pūjāṁ kariṣye
Meaning: Om Vishnu Vishnu Vishnu. For the destruction of all accumulated sins and for the pleasure of Shri Kāla Bhairava, I perform this puja to the best of my ability.

- •Common purposes: protection, peace, obstacle removal
Guru Smarana (Remembering the Guru)

Mentally bow to your Guru or the universal Guru principle. Recite the Guru Vandana shloka once with folded hands.

ॐ गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः। गुरुः साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥
Om Gurur Brahmā Gurur Viṣṇuḥ Gurur Devo Maheśvaraḥ | Guruḥ Sākṣāt Parabrahma Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ ||
Meaning: The Guru is Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara. The Guru is the Supreme Brahman. I bow to that Guru.

- •Guru Smarana is essential in all Bhairava sadhana
- •Mental prostration with folded hands is sufficient
- •If no personal guru, bow to the teaching tradition
Dhyana (Visualization of Kāla Bhairava)

Close your eyes and visualize Kāla Bhairava using the dhyana shloka. See a fierce, dark-complexioned deity with four arms. He carries a trishula (trident), damaru (drum), sword (khaḍga), and skull-cup (kapāla). A garland of skulls adorns his neck, a black dog sits at his feet. He is the ruler of time, fearless and powerful.
Mantra:
ध्यायेत्कालं महाकालं कालभैरवमव्ययम्। चतुर्भुजं कृष्णवर्णं शूलडमरुधारिणम्॥
Dhyāyet Kālaṁ Mahākālaṁ Kālabhairavamavyayam | Caturbhujaṁ Kṛṣṇavarṇaṁ Śūlaḍamarudhāriṇam ||
Meaning: Meditate upon Kāla, Mahākāla, the imperishable Kāla Bhairava. Four-armed, dark-complexioned, bearing the trident and damaru.
💡 Tips:
- •Visualize: fierce dark form, four arms, trishula in upper right, damaru in upper left, sword in lower right, skull-cup in lower left
- •See a black dog (śvāna) at his feet, a garland of skulls around his neck
- •If visualization is difficult, gaze at the deity image with soft eyes
- •Feel the awesome power and fierce grace of the time-lord
Avahana (Invocation)

Ring the bell if available. With folded hands, invite Kāla Bhairava to accept your worship. Light the diya now if not already lit. Feel his divine presence arriving.

ॐ श्री काल भैरवाय नमः। आवाहयामि।
Om Śrī Kāla Bhairavāya Namaḥ | Āvāhayāmi
Meaning: Om, salutations to Shri Kāla Bhairava. I invoke and welcome you.

Asana Offering (Seat for Deity)

Offer a symbolic seat by placing a flower or akshata (rice grain) before the image.

Meaning: I offer this flower as a seat.

Padya, Arghya, and Achamaniya (Water Offerings)

Offer water three times with a spoon or right hand. First at the feet (Padya), then as welcome water (Arghya), then as sipping water (Achamaniya). Pour a few drops each time near the base of the image.

Om Pādayoḥ Pādyaṁ Samarpayāmi | Om Hastayoḥ Arghyaṁ Samarpayāmi | Om Ācamanīyaṁ Jalaṁ Samarpayāmi
Meaning: I offer water for washing the feet. I offer welcome water for the hands. I offer sipping water.

- •Pour just a few drops each time
- •These three offerings honor the deity as a revered guest arriving at your home
Dhupa and Dipa (Incense and Lamp)

Light the incense and wave it before the deity in three clockwise circles. Then wave the lit diya similarly. These represent the elements of air and fire.
Mantra:
ॐ धूपमाघ्रापयामि। ॐ दीपं दर्शयामि।
Om Dhūpam Āghrāpayāmi | Om Dīpaṁ Darśayāmi
Meaning: I offer incense for fragrance. I show the light of the lamp.

- •Wave in clockwise circles
- •Keep diya flame steady throughout puja
- •Loban dhoop is especially powerful for Bhairava sadhana
- •Never skip incense in Bhairava worship
Batuk Bhairav Kavach (Protection, 1 Recitation)

Recite the Batuk Bhairav Kavach once for protection. The Kavach creates a shield around you during worship. If you do not have the full text, chant "Om Kālabhairavāya Namaḥ" 11 times instead.

The full Kavach text should be obtained separately. Read from a printed copy while learning.

- •Recite with devotion and focus
- •Feel a protective shield forming around you
- •The Kavach protects against negative energies during and after sadhana
Pushpanjali (Flower Offering)

Take flowers in both hands. Offer them at the feet of Kāla Bhairava while chanting his mantra.

ॐ श्री काल भैरवाय नमः। पुष्पैः पूजयामि।
Om Śrī Kāla Bhairavāya Namaḥ | Puṣpaiḥ Pūjayāmi
Meaning: I worship with flowers.

- •Offer with both hands cupped
- •Dark red hibiscus is most auspicious for Kāla Bhairava
- •If unavailable, offer mentally
Simple Archana (8 Names with Flowers)

Offer a flower petal with each name of Kāla Bhairava. These eight names invoke his key qualities.

Main Mantra Japa (1 Mala, 108 Repetitions)

Chant the main Kāla Bhairava nama mantra 108 times (one mala). Use a japa mala or count on fingers. Sit with straight spine, close eyes gently, let the mind settle into the rhythm.

Meaning: Salutations to Kāla Bhairava, the Lord of Time

- •Hold mala in right hand, use middle finger and thumb
- •Do not use index finger on mala
- •Quality over quantity: feel each repetition

Naivedya (Food Offering)

Place prasad on the separate bhog plate. Sprinkle drops of water around it clockwise to purify. Offer to Kāla Bhairava with the mantra. Wait a moment for the deity to accept.

ॐ श्री काल भैरवाय नमः। इदं नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि।
Om Śrī Kāla Bhairavāya Namaḥ | Idaṁ Naivedyaṁ Samarpayāmi
Meaning: I offer this food to Shri Kāla Bhairava.

- •Black sesame laddoos, urad dal without salt, dark sweets, jaggery
- •Rice mixed with black sesame is excellent for Kāla Bhairava
- •After puja, feed prasad to a dog (especially black dogs) or share with family
Uttara-Aposhanam (Water After Naivedya)

Offer a few drops of water after the food. This is the symbolic washing of hands after meal for the deity.
Mantra:
ॐ उत्तरापोशनं जलं समर्पयामि।
Om Uttarāpośanaṁ Jalaṁ Samarpayāmi
Meaning: I offer water for rinsing after the meal.

Dipa Aarti (Lamp Offering)

Take the lit diya and wave it before Kāla Bhairava in clockwise circles: three times at the face, twice at the navel, once sweeping the full form. Ring bell with left hand if possible.

ॐ जय काल भैरव, ॐ जय काल भैरव। कालों के काल महाकाल, भक्त जन हित काज सवारे॥
Om Jaya Kāla Bhairava, Om Jaya Kāla Bhairava | Kāloṁ Ke Kāla Mahākāla, Bhakta Jana Hita Kāja Savāre ||
Meaning: Victory to Kāla Bhairava! The supreme time beyond all time, who fulfills the purposes of his devotees.

- •Three circles at face, two at middle, one full sweep
- •If no aarti text, wave lamp while chanting nama mantra
Pradakshina (Circumambulation)

Walk clockwise around the puja space once if possible. Otherwise turn clockwise on your seat, or circumambulate mentally.
Mantra:
यानि कानि च पापानि जन्मान्तरकृतानि च। तानि तानि विनश्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणपदे पदे॥
Yāni Kāni Ca Pāpāni Janmāntarakṛtāni Ca | Tāni Tāni Vinaśyanti Pradakṣiṇapade Pade ||
Meaning: Whatever sins committed across lifetimes are destroyed with each step of circumambulation.

- •One to three rounds for beginner level
Silent Contemplation

Sit in silence for 2 minutes. Feel gratitude toward Kāla Bhairava. Contemplate his fierce, time-ruling nature and the impermanence of all things.

Kshama Prarthana (Apology for Mistakes)

With folded hands, ask forgiveness for any errors or omissions. Even a perfect puja is incomplete without humility.

ॐ अपराधसहस्राणि क्रियन्ते’हर्निशं मया। दासो’यमिति मां मत्वा क्षमस्व परमेश्वर॥ मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं सुरेश्वर। यत्पूजितं मया देव परिपूर्णं तदस्तु मे॥
Om Aparādhasahasrāṇi Kriyante'harniśaṁ Mayā | Dāso'yamiti Māṁ Matvā Kṣamasva Parameśvara || Mantrahīnaṁ Kriyāhīnaṁ Bhaktihīnaṁ Sureśvara | Yat Pūjitaṁ Mayā Deva Paripūrṇaṁ Tad Astu Me ||
Meaning: Thousands of offenses are committed by me day and night. Considering me your servant, forgive me, O Supreme Lord. Though my mantras were imperfect, my actions incomplete, and my devotion lacking, may whatever worship I offered be considered complete.

Visarjana (Respectful Conclusion)

Request Kāla Bhairava to depart from the external form but remain forever in your heart. This is a loving farewell, not a dismissal. Bow with folded hands.

ॐ श्री काल भैरवाय नमः। यथास्थानं प्रवेशयामि। हृदये सदा तिष्ठतु॥
Om Śrī Kāla Bhairavāya Namaḥ | Yathāsthānaṁ Praveśayāmi | Hṛdaye Sadā Tiṣṭhatu ||
Meaning: I request you to return to your abode. May you always reside in my heart.

Shanti Paath (Peace Chant)

- •Counting mantra japa mechanically. Feel the fierce, protective energy of Kāla Bhairava with each repetition
- •Not maintaining cleanliness of puja items and the bhog plate
- •Forgetting to request forgiveness (Kshama Prarthana) at the end
- •Extinguishing the lamp too soon. Keep it lit until Visarjana is complete
- •Using ghee lamp instead of mustard oil. Mustard oil is traditional and removes Rahu doshas
- •Rushing to collect bija mantras online. Stay with the nama mantra for months before considering advanced mantras under guru guidance
- •Skipping naivedya (food offering). Offering bhog is essential in Kāla Bhairava sadhana

💡Additional Notes
- •Best days: Saturday (primary), Tuesday, Ashtami (8th lunar day), and Chaturdashi (14th). Rahu Kaal on Sunday is also powerful. Start immediately, do not wait for a perfect day
- •Practice daily once you begin. Never skip a single day, even when sick or traveling. Mental puja is valid when physical items are unavailable
- •Kāla Bhairava is the fierce time-lord and guardian of Kashi (Varanasi). He demands discipline and regularity above all else
- •Direction: Always face South for Kāla Bhairava worship
- •Dress code (from guru): Cover legs fully during worship. Wear black or dark clothing when possible
- •Progressive japa: Start with 1 mala for 7 days, then increase to 3 malas for 2 weeks. Fix at minimum 5 malas daily for 6 months to 1 year. Milestone: 1,000 malas total
- •Post-puja protocol (from guru): Maintain complete silence after worship. Feed stray dogs (especially black dogs) while invoking Bhairava. Return home silently. Then distribute prasad to family
- •Photo selection (from guru): Use Kashi temple Kāla Bhairava image with trishula and mukut (crown). Kopper (sharp features) should be visible
- •Saturday seva: Clean house thoroughly, volunteer at goshalas, old age homes. Feed crows (Shanishwar's vahana). Physical labor matters, not just donations
- •Preferred bhog: Black sesame laddoos, urad dal (without salt), dark sweets, jaggery. Keep a separate plate exclusively for deity offerings
- •Diya oil: Mustard oil (primary, removes Rahu doshas), sesame oil (reduces Saturn problems). Never use kerosene
- •Fragrance is paramount in Bhairava sadhana. Never skip incense. Loban dhoop is ideal
- •The Dashaanga system: This beginner level covers Pujana, Kavach, and Japa. Higher levels add more limbs
- •After 20 days of regular practice, consider moving to Intermediate level
- •43-day Kalabhairava Ashtakam sadhana (30 recitations daily) is an advanced practice. Master this beginner level first
