The Sutra
"Here is the sphere of change, change, change. Through change consume change."
Paul Reps translation, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (1957)
Understanding
Everything changes. The body changes, thoughts change, emotions change, seasons change. Instead of resisting change or seeking permanence, USE change. Let change consume itself. When you fully allow every change to happen without resistance, when you ride change completely, the changes exhaust themselves. Through change, consume change. In the burning through of all change, the unchanging is revealed.
Original Sanskrit
न मे बन्धो न मोक्षो मे भीतस्यैता विभीषिकाः ।
na me bandho na moksho me bheetasyaitaa vibheeshikaah |
Vijnanabhairava Verse 119 (Technique 96 of 112)
How to Practice
Sit and observe the constant changes happening: breath changing, thoughts changing, sounds changing, sensations shifting.
Do not resist any change. Welcome each shift. Let everything flow and transform.
Accelerate: actively notice MORE changes. The more changes you perceive, the faster the consuming happens.
Feel change consuming itself - like fire consuming fuel until there is nothing left to burn.
When change has consumed all change, what remains? The changeless awareness that was watching all along.
Rest in that which does not change - it was always here, but hidden by the drama of constant change.
Duration
20-30 minutes
Best Time
Any time - change is always present
