Verse 1

Sanskrit

श्री गणेशाय नमः । भैरव उवाच । श‍ृणुष्व परमेशानि कवचं मन्मुखोदितम् । महामृत्युञ्जयस्यास्य न देयं परमाद्भुतम् ॥ १॥

Transliteration

śrī gaṇeśāya namaḥ | bhairava uvāca | śṛṇuṣva parameśāni kavacaṃ manmukhoditam | mahāmṛtyuñjayasyāsya na deyaṃ paramādbhutam || 1||

Translation

Salutations to Sri Ganesha. Bhairava said: Listen, O Supreme Goddess, to the kavach spoken from my mouth. This supremely wondrous armor of Maha Mrityunjaya, it must never be given away carelessly.

Verse 2

Sanskrit

यं धृत्वा यं पठित्वा च श्रुत्वा च कवचोत्तमम् । त्रैलोक्याधिपतिर्भूत्वा सुखितोऽस्मि महेश्वरि ॥ २॥ तदेववर्णयिष्यामि तव प्रीत्या वरानने । तथापि परमं तत्त्वं न दातव्यं दुरात्मने ॥ ३॥

Transliteration

yaṃ dhṛtvā yaṃ paṭhitvā ca śrutvā ca kavacottamam | trailokyādhipatirbhūtvā sukhito'smi maheśvari || 2|| tadevavarṇayiṣyāmi tava prītyā varānane | tathāpi paramaṃ tattvaṃ na dātavyaṃ durātmane || 3||

Translation

By wearing it, by reciting it, by hearing this supreme kavach, I became lord of the three worlds and am contented, O Maheshvari. I shall describe that same to you out of love, O beautiful-faced one. Yet this supreme truth must never be given to the wicked.

Verse 3

Sanskrit

अस्य श्रीमहामृत्युञ्जयकवचस्य श्रीभैरव ऋषिः, गायत्रीछन्दः, श्रीमहामृत्युञ्जयो महारुद्रो देवता, ॐ बीजं, जूं शक्तिः, सः कीलकं, हौमिति तत्त्वं, चतुर्वर्गसाधने मृत्युञ्जयकवचपाठे विनियोगः ॥

Transliteration

asya śrīmahāmṛtyuñjayakavacasya śrībhairava ṛṣiḥ, gāyatrīchandaḥ, śrīmahāmṛtyuñjayo mahārudro devatā, oṃ bījaṃ, jūṃ śaktiḥ, saḥ kīlakaṃ, haumiti tattvaṃ, caturvargasādhane mṛtyuñjayakavacapāṭhe viniyogaḥ ||

Translation

The sage of this kavach is Sri Bhairava. The meter is Gayatri. The deity is Sri Maha Mrityunjaya Maharudra. The seed is Om, the power is Jum, the key is Sah, the tattva is Haum. The application is for attaining the four goals of life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha).

Verse 4

Sanskrit

ॐ चन्द्रमण्डलमध्यस्थं रुद्रं भाले विचिन्त्य तम् । तत्रस्थं चिन्तयेत् साध्यं मृत्युं प्राप्तोऽपि जीवति ॥ १॥

Transliteration

oṃ candramaṇḍalamadhyasthaṃ rudraṃ bhāle vicintya tam | tatrasthaṃ cintayet sādhyaṃ mṛtyuṃ prāpto'pi jīvati || 1||

Translation

Om, Contemplating Rudra situated in the center of the lunar orb on the forehead, meditating upon the goal situated there, even one who has reached death, lives.

Verse 5

Sanskrit

ॐ जूं सः हौं शिरः पातु देवो मृत्युञ्जयो मम । ॐ श्रीं शिवो ललाटं मे ॐ हौं भ्रुवौ सदाशिवः ॥ २॥

Transliteration

oṃ jūṃ saḥ hauṃ śiraḥ pātu devo mṛtyuñjayo mama | oṃ śrīṃ śivo lalāṭaṃ me oṃ hauṃ bhruvau sadāśivaḥ || 2||

Translation

Om Jum Sah Haum, May the god Mrityunjaya protect my head. Om Shrim, may Shiva protect my forehead. Om Haum, may Sadashiva protect my eyebrows.

Verse 6

Sanskrit

नीलकण्ठोऽवतान्नेत्रे कपर्दी मेऽवताच्छ्रुती । त्रिलोचनोऽवताद् गण्डौ नासां मे त्रिपुरान्तकः ॥ ३॥

Transliteration

nīlakaṇṭho'vatānnetre kapardī me'vatācchrutī | trilocano'vatād gaṇḍau nāsāṃ me tripurāntakaḥ || 3||

Translation

May Nilakantha (the blue-throated) protect my eyes, may Kapardi protect my ears. May Trilochana (the three-eyed) protect my cheeks, may Tripurantaka protect my nose.

Verse 7

Sanskrit

मुखं पीयूषघटभृदोष्ठौ मे कृत्तिकाम्बरः । हनुं मे हाटकेशनो मुखं बटुकभैरवः ॥ ४॥

Transliteration

mukhaṃ pīyūṣaghaṭabhṛdoṣṭhau me kṛttikāmbaraḥ | hanuṃ me hāṭakeśano mukhaṃ baṭukabhairavaḥ || 4||

Translation

May the bearer of the pot of nectar protect my mouth, may the one clad in elephant skin protect my lips. May Hatakeshana protect my chin, may Batuka Bhairava protect my face.

Verse 8

Sanskrit

कन्धरां कालमथनो गलं गणप्रियोऽवतु । स्कन्धौ स्कन्दपिता पातु हस्तौ मे गिरिशोऽवतु ॥ ५॥

Transliteration

kandharāṃ kālamathano galaṃ gaṇapriyo'vatu | skandhau skandapitā pātu hastau me giriśo'vatu || 5||

Translation

May the destroyer of Kala protect my neck, may the beloved of the Ganas protect my throat. May the father of Skanda protect my shoulders, may Girisha protect my hands.

Verse 9

Sanskrit

नखान् मे गिरिजानाथः पायादङ्गुलिसंयुतान् । स्तनौ तारापतिः पातु वक्षः पशुपतिर्मम ॥ ६॥

Transliteration

nakhān me girijānāthaḥ pāyādaṅgulisaṃyutān | stanau tārāpatiḥ pātu vakṣaḥ paśupatirmama || 6||

Translation

May the lord of Girija protect my nails along with my fingers. May Tarapati protect my chest, may Pashupati protect my breast.

Verse 10

Sanskrit

कुक्षिं कुबेरवरदः पार्श्वौ मे मारशासनः । शर्वः पातु तथा नाभिं शूली पृष्ठं ममावतु ॥ ७॥

Transliteration

kukṣiṃ kuberavaradaḥ pārśvau me māraśāsanaḥ | śarvaḥ pātu tathā nābhiṃ śūlī pṛṣṭhaṃ mamāvatu || 7||

Translation

May the boon-giver of Kubera protect my belly, may the chastiser of Mara protect my sides. May Sharva protect my navel, may the trident-bearer protect my back.

Verse 11

Sanskrit

शिश्र्नं मे शङ्करः पातु गुह्यं गुह्यकवल्लभः । कटिं कालान्तकः पायादूरू मेऽन्धकघातकः ॥ ८॥

Transliteration

śiśrnaṃ me śaṅkaraḥ pātu guhyaṃ guhyakavallabhaḥ | kaṭiṃ kālāntakaḥ pāyādūrū me'ndhakaghātakaḥ || 8||

Translation

May Shankara protect my loins, may the beloved of the Guhyakas protect my private parts. May the ender of Kala protect my waist, may the slayer of Andhaka protect my thighs.

Verse 12

Sanskrit

जागरूकोऽवताज्जानू जङ्घे मे कालभैरवः । गुल्फो पायाज्जटाधारी पादौ मृत्युञ्जयोऽवतु ॥ ९॥

Transliteration

jāgarūko'vatājjānū jaṅghe me kālabhairavaḥ | gulpho pāyājjaṭādhārī pādau mṛtyuñjayo'vatu || 9||

Translation

May the ever-vigilant one protect my knees, may Kala Bhairava protect my shins. May the one with matted locks protect my ankles, may Mrityunjaya protect my feet.

Verse 13

Sanskrit

पादादिमूर्धपर्यन्तमघोरः पातु मे सदा । शिरसः पादपर्यन्तं सद्योजातो ममावतु ॥ १०॥

Transliteration

pādādimūrdhaparyantamaghoraḥ pātu me sadā | śirasaḥ pādaparyantaṃ sadyojāto mamāvatu || 10||

Translation

May Aghora always protect me from feet to head. May Sadyojata protect me from head to feet.

Verse 14

Sanskrit

रक्षाहीनं नामहीनं वपुः पात्वमृतेश्वरः । पूर्वे बलविकरणो दक्षिणे कालशासनः ॥ ११॥

Transliteration

rakṣāhīnaṃ nāmahīnaṃ vapuḥ pātvamṛteśvaraḥ | pūrve balavikaraṇo dakṣiṇe kālaśāsanaḥ || 11||

Translation

May Amriteshvara protect my body from whatever protection or name may be lacking. May the transformer of strength protect in the East, may the ruler of Kala protect in the South.

Verse 15

Sanskrit

पश्चिमे पार्वतीनाथो ह्युत्तरे मां मनोन्मनः । ऐशान्यामीश्वरः पायादाग्नेय्यामग्निलोचनः ॥ १२॥

Transliteration

paścime pārvatīnātho hyuttare māṃ manonmanaḥ | aiśānyāmīśvaraḥ pāyādāgneyyāmagnilocanaḥ || 12||

Translation

May the lord of Parvati protect in the West, may Manonmana protect me in the North. May Ishvara protect in the Northeast, may the fire-eyed one protect in the Southeast.

Verse 16

Sanskrit

नैरृत्यां शम्भुरव्यान्मां वायव्यां वायुवाहनः । ऊर्ध्वे बलप्रमथनः पाताले परमेश्वरः ॥ १३॥

Transliteration

nairṛtyāṃ śambhuravyānmāṃ vāyavyāṃ vāyuvāhanaḥ | ūrdhve balapramathanaḥ pātāle parameśvaraḥ || 13||

Translation

May Shambhu protect me in the Southwest, may Vayuvahana protect in the Northwest. May the crusher of strength protect above, may Parameshvara protect in the netherworld.

Verse 17

Sanskrit

दशदिक्षु सदा पातु महामृत्युञ्जयश्च माम् । रणे राजकुले द्यूते विषमे प्राणसंशये ॥ १४॥ पायाद् ओं जूं महारुद्रो देवदेवो दशाक्षरः । प्रभाते पातु मां ब्रह्मा मध्याह्ने भैरवोऽवतु ॥ १५॥

Transliteration

daśadikṣu sadā pātu mahāmṛtyuñjayaśca mām | raṇe rājakule dyūte viṣame prāṇasaṃśaye || 14|| pāyād oṃ jūṃ mahārudro devadevo daśākṣaraḥ | prabhāte pātu māṃ brahmā madhyāhne bhairavo'vatu || 15||

Translation

May Maha Mrityunjaya always protect me in all ten directions, in battle, in royal courts, in gambling, in perilous situations, when life is in doubt. May Om Jum, the great Rudra, God of gods, the ten-syllabled one protect. May Brahma protect me at dawn, may Bhairava protect at noon.

Verse 18

Sanskrit

सायं सर्वेश्वरः पातु निशायां नित्यचेतनः । अर्धरात्रे महादेवो निशान्ते मां महोमयः ॥ १६॥ सर्वदा सर्वतः पातु ॐ जूं सः हौं मृत्युञ्जयः । इतीदं कवचं पुण्यं त्रिषु लोकेषु दुर्लभम् ॥ १७॥

Transliteration

sāyaṃ sarveśvaraḥ pātu niśāyāṃ nityacetanaḥ | ardharātre mahādevo niśānte māṃ mahomayaḥ || 16|| sarvadā sarvataḥ pātu oṃ jūṃ saḥ hauṃ mṛtyuñjayaḥ | itīdaṃ kavacaṃ puṇyaṃ triṣu lokeṣu durlabham || 17||

Translation

May Sarveshvara protect at evening, may the eternally conscious one protect at night. May Mahadeva protect at midnight, may the great luminous one protect me at night's end. May Om Jum Sah Haum Mrityunjaya always protect me from everywhere. This is the holy kavach, rare in the three worlds.

Verse 19

Sanskrit

फलश्रुति सर्वमन्त्रमयं गुह्यं सर्वतन्त्रेषु गोपितम् । पुण्यं पुण्यप्रदं दिव्यं देवदेवाधिदैवतम् ॥ १८॥ य इदं च पठेन्मन्त्री कवचं वार्चयेत् ततः । तस्य हस्ते महादेवि त्र्यम्बकस्याष्ट सिद्धयः ॥ १९॥

Transliteration

phalaśruti sarvamantramayaṃ guhyaṃ sarvatantreṣu gopitam | puṇyaṃ puṇyapradaṃ divyaṃ devadevādhidaivatam || 18|| ya idaṃ ca paṭhenmantrī kavacaṃ vārcayet tataḥ | tasya haste mahādevi tryambakasyāṣṭa siddhayaḥ || 19||

Translation

Containing all mantras, secret, concealed in all tantras, holy, bestower of holiness, divine, presiding deity of the God of gods. O Mahadevi, the mantra-practitioner who recites and worships with this kavach, the eight siddhis of Tryambaka rest in their hands.

Verse 20

Sanskrit

रणे धृत्वा चरेद्युद्धं हत्वा शत्रूञ्जयं लभेत् । जयं कृत्वा गृहं देवि सम्प्राप्स्यति सुखी पुनः ॥ २०॥ महाभये महारोगे महामारीभये तथा । दुर्भिक्षे शत्रुसंहारे पठेत् कवचमादरात् ॥ २१॥

Transliteration

raṇe dhṛtvā caredyuddhaṃ hatvā śatrūñjayaṃ labhet | jayaṃ kṛtvā gṛhaṃ devi samprāpsyati sukhī punaḥ || 20|| mahābhaye mahāroge mahāmārībhaye tathā | durbhikṣe śatrusaṃhāre paṭhet kavacamādarāt || 21||

Translation

Wearing it in battle, one should fight, killing enemies, one attains victory. Having conquered, O Goddess, one returns home happy again. In great fear, in great disease, in the terror of plague, in famine and for destruction of enemies, one should recite this kavach with reverence.

Verse 21

Sanskrit

सर्व तत् प्रशमं याति मृत्युञ्जयप्रसादतः । धनं पुत्रान् सुखं लक्ष्मीमारोग्यं सर्वसम्पदः ॥ २२॥ प्राप्नोति साधकः सद्यो देवि सत्यं न संशयः । इतीदं कवचं पुण्यं महामृत्युञ्जयस्य तु । गोप्यं सिद्धिप्रदं गुह्यं गोपनीयं स्वयोनिवत् ॥ २३॥

Transliteration

sarva tat praśamaṃ yāti mṛtyuñjayaprasādataḥ | dhanaṃ putrān sukhaṃ lakṣmīmārogyaṃ sarvasampadaḥ || 22|| prāpnoti sādhakaḥ sadyo devi satyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ | itīdaṃ kavacaṃ puṇyaṃ mahāmṛtyuñjayasya tu | gopyaṃ siddhipradaṃ guhyaṃ gopanīyaṃ svayonivat || 23||

Translation

All that is pacified by the grace of Mrityunjaya. Wealth, children, happiness, Lakshmi, health, all prosperity, the practitioner attains these immediately. O Goddess, truly, without doubt. This holy kavach of Maha Mrityunjaya, secret, siddhi-bestowing, hidden, to be guarded like one's own origin.
