Om! Worship, worship the Lord of beings, the manifest Maheshvara in Bhairava's form, the remover of difficulties - who is fierce and fiercer than fierce, holding staff in hand, who has cut enemies to pieces, who grants happiness, who makes the world joyful, who sports playfully, who shows his teeth (fangs), who dances, whose conch sounds with damaru beats, whose earrings swing, who smiles sweetly, who bears the world's burden.
Deep Meaning
This opening verse establishes Bhairava as Kashtahara - the remover of all difficulties (kashta). Though fierce (chanda-pratichanda), he is the source of all happiness (saukhya-kara). The staff (danda) represents his authority as cosmic policeman who protects dharma. Cutting enemies to pieces (krita-ripu-khanda) means destroying inner enemies: kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (delusion), mada (pride), matsarya (jealousy). His playful sport (vilasita-santa) shows that creation is divine lila (play). The damaru and conch together create the primal nada (sound) that manifests the universe. His sweet smile (madhura-hasanta) despite fierce fangs reveals the paradox - terror and tenderness coexist in Bhairava.

This verse reveals Bhairava's Ardhanarishvara (half-woman, half-man) form. The large belly (lambodara) signifies he contains the entire universe. "Sthira-kucha-shila" (firm-breasted nature) explicitly refers to his Shakti aspect - Bhairava and Kali/Bhairavi are inseparable. Lotus-wide eyes show compassionate vision despite fierce appearance. "Suvimala-desha" (most pure realm) is both Kashi (Varanasi) where he resides and the pure consciousness within. As "kala" (embodiment of 64 arts/kalas), he is the source of all creativity and culture. Is he not your protector? He who has covered/pervaded the world, who is the creator of creation, who is engaged in sustaining all.

Large ears (akarna-vishala) signify he hears all prayers and cries for help - nothing escapes his attention. His forehead "rumbles" (ghurghūrita-bhala) with the sound of the third eye opening, the eye of wisdom that burns away ignorance. As protector of truth-speakers (satya-ukti-pala), he especially guards those who speak and live in truth (satya) even when it's difficult. The lotus garland on chest connects him to Vishnu (whose chest bears Lakshmi) - showing Bhairava as all-inclusive divinity beyond sectarian boundaries. The rhetorical question "Is he not your protector?" (kim te na gopta) is a call to surrender - why fear anything when the lord of time himself protects you? As bhakta-priya (beloved of devotees), Bhairava is easily accessible through pure devotion. Lord of Garuda (vihaga-pati) shows he is beyond the Vaishnava-Shaiva divide - even Vishnu's vehicle serves him. Lord of perfect poetry (vritta-pada) means he inspires all sacred literature and is pleased by well-composed hymns. Pride-destroyer (garva-hara) is crucial - spiritual ego is the last and most subtle obstacle. The elephant vehicle (matanga-yana) paradoxically belongs to Ganesha, but here shows Bhairava's mastery over all obstacles (Ganesha himself worships Bhairava). Pearl-adorned and fragrant shows his beauty. "Kalpita-sara" (imagined essence) has deep meaning - Bhairava is the substratum (sara) on which the entire kalpa (cosmic cycle/imagination) is projected.

This verse explicitly describes Bhairava's inseparable union with Kali/Bhairavi. "Kathina-stana-kumbha" and "sthira-pina-payodhara" (firm, full breasts) refer to the Shakti aspect - without the feminine divine energy, Bhairava is Shava (corpse). "Kali-dimbha" (united with Kali) shows they are yugala (divine couple), not separate. The sword (khadga) is Kali's weapon that cuts through ignorance and severs attachment. Though surrounded by bhuta-pishacha (ghosts and goblins) in cremation grounds, his speech to devotees is "sputa-mridu-vacha" (clearly gentle) - fierce to demons, tender to devotees. "Vilama-sudesha" is the sacred Kashi (Varanasi), Bhairava's earthly abode. As kashta-suresha (remover of devas' difficulties), even gods worship him - he is the god of gods. "Priti-nara" (delighting in humans) shows special affection for human devotees. The reference to Bhaga (a Vedic god whose eyes were destroyed) and war-intoxication shows Bhairava as the ultimate warrior. "Kshyudra-vidara" (tearer of the petty) destroys both petty obstacles and small-minded ego-attitudes. Contentment-giver (tushti-kara) grants deep satisfaction beyond fleeting pleasure. Infinite glory (mahimana-ananta) - his greatness cannot be measured. Dwelling in yogis' hearts (yogi-hridanta), he is the inner guru, the antaryamin (inner controller). Awakening-giver (bodha-kara) - he grants bodhi, enlightenment. From him all faults flow away (galada-shesha-dosha) like dirt washed away in a river. Pure nourishment (vimala-suposha) - he sustains the spiritual life. Causal sheath (karana-kosha) - he is the deepest layer of being, beyond gross and subtle bodies. Ultimate liberator (mukti-kara) who grants moksha, final freedom from samsara. The refrain "bhaja bhaja bhūteśam" (worship worship the Lord of beings) creates a mantra-like effect throughout.
