Ruru Bhairava, named after the fierce mythical creature Ruru, is the guardian of the south-eastern direction (Agneya disha). In the Rudrayāmala and Śilpaśāstra his group is described as pure white in complexion, adorned with ruby-set ornaments; some regional temple traditions instead depict him light blue. His consort is the Mātṛkā Māheśvarī, and in the astrological tradition he is linked with Venus (Śukra). With four arms bearing deer, axe, sword, and bowl, he rides the bull. He grants devotees the blessings of knowledge and prosperity, rewarding the sincere pursuit of vidya with material and spiritual abundance.
