The Burning of the Selves: Baba Mahakal's Smashan Element in Sadhana
Have you heard the story of the Buddha when he was staying in the forest near a village?
The Story of the Grieving Mother
One day, a grieving woman approached him, carrying the body of her dead son. With tears in her eyes, she begged Buddha to bring him back to life, willing to offer anything in return.
Buddha smiled gently and said:
"Go into the village and bring me a bowl of rice from a household where no one has ever died. Then, your son will live again."
The woman, filled with hope, wandered from house to house, asking every family. From morning until night, she searched - but in every home, death had already touched someone. Not a single house was free from loss. Finally, exhausted and broken by this truth, she returned to Buddha. In that moment, she surrendered and eventually became a great sanyasini in his lineage.
The Deeper Question
Now, here is the deeper question:
Did her son truly die that day? Or did her other selves - her clinging identities, her illusions, her desperate personalities - die before the universal consciousness embodied by Buddha?
In her illusion, she wanted to alter the nature of reality - to reverse death itself. Even if such a boon had been given by Mahakal, the question remains: would it change her destiny? Would her son never die again? Would she never age, never suffer? The truth is simple - no.
That boon would only blind her further in Maya. Her attachment would deepen, and eventually both mother and son would suffer even more.
The Path of Mahabhairav
This is why the path of Baba Mahabhairav is unlike any other. He is not an ordinary deity - his kingdom begins in the Smashan. Not only the physical cremation ground, but the inner smashan where illusions are burned.
Just as that woman faced the truth of impermanence, walking into Baba's path means facing the fire that consumes every false layer of yourself.
The Inner Cremation Ground
In Baba's smashan-yajna, all versions of you that block your progress are reduced to ashes:
- Every fake identity
- Every limiting perspective
- Every unhealthy attachment
All is burned in his sacred fire, not necessarily through outer loss, but by transforming your mind, your neural pathways, your consciousness itself. He creates the cremation ground within you - until your awareness rises beyond the ordinary dimensions of life.
The Paradox
And here lies the paradox, one that the ordinary mind cannot grasp:
When the false dies within you, you do not withdraw from life - you live it more fully.
You may be in your home, with your family, at work, in love, tasting the joys of life. But unlike before, you are untouched by attachment. You are satisfied - not because of possessions, but from the soul. That inner bliss is mukti itself.
The Divine 4D Play
This is how Baba Mahakal runs his divine 4D play - burning away the false until only truth remains. He is the Mahanayaka, the leader of leaders, the master of masters. And once he comes to you, there is no turning back. Salutations to Baba Mahakal Mahaprabhu and to Maa Adyakali. At their lotus feet, may we be liberated even before we realize that we are free.
All love to the readers.
