Chapter 16 of 76 · Vayaviya Samhita · Overall chapter 404 of 464

Manifestation of Devi Shakti

Ishvara creates Devi directly from his own body as the eternal, unborn Shakti; at Brahma's request that she take a portion of herself and be born as Daksha's daughter to enable the lineage of women, she agrees, and since that moment sexual intercourse has been instated in the world for the purpose of creation.

Vayu said

The divinity Mahadeva answered him in deep words that rumbled like a large cloud, sweet and auspicious, clear and slow. The lines were full of meaning and royal in their signs, bright, covering all beings and skilled in protection. They were charming and sweet, and he smiled before speaking. Ishvara spoke to the maker of the world in well-formed words: "Child, fortunate one, grandfather, you are my son. I know the weight of your sentences. You have tormented yourself with austerity so that beings can flourish. I am pleased with your austerities and will grant what you wish."

Having spoken so in sweet and generous words, Hara, supreme among the divinities, created Devi from his own body. Those who know the brahman call her Devi, who has all divine qualities. She is Shakti, greater than the greatest, truly unborn, free of old age and death. Bhavani appeared from a part of Bhava's body. Words, thoughts and the senses cannot reach her. She appeared from a part of her husband's body and showed herself. She bewilders the whole universe with her maya. Though in the highest truth she is unborn, she appeared from Ishvara's body. Her supreme form is beyond the grasp even of the devas. Inside her husband's body, Ishvari of the universe divides herself in this way. She is Parameshani, Maheshvari of all the worlds, all-knowing and all-pervading, subtle and beyond ideas of being and non-being. Her supreme radiance lights the whole universe.

Seeing the great one, Brahma bowed to her and prayed. Brahma said: "Devi, the divinity created me earlier and gave me the task of making beings. I have created the whole universe, devas and the rest, by the power of my mind, but though I make them again and again they do not flourish. I have now decided to use sexual union for creation, so that beings may thrive in this way. But so far the undecaying line of women has not come from you, and so I lack the capacity to make a line of women. All kinds of Shakti come from you. You give every kind of Shakti to everyone everywhere. You give boons. You are Maya. You are Sureshvari. I beg you, you who go everywhere: to multiply moving and unmoving things, use a portion of yourself now to be born as the daughter of Daksha, my son."

So Brahma asked Devi, who was in truth Brahma's own origin. From the middle of her eyebrows she made a Shakti as resplendent as herself. The divinity Hara, supreme among gods, saw this, smiled and said to her: "Brahma has worshipped you with austerities. So you should do what he wants." She accepted Paramesha's command and, as Brahma had said, became Daksha's daughter. She gave Brahma an unmatched Shakti in the form of the brahman. Bulls among sages, when this entered the god's body, Deva and Devi vanished. Since then women have been placed in the world for enjoyment. Lords of brahmanas, sexual union became the way to create beings, and Brahma was full of joy and satisfaction. So I have told you everything about the origin of Devi's Shakti. Hearing it increases good merit and it is part of the account of the creation of beings. A person who recites this account of Shakti emerging from Devi every day gains all good merit and also gets auspicious sons.
